To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOURO ROBERTSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Numbering Attachment for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention elates to an improvement in numbering attachments for printing-presses, and has for its object to provide a means whereby bonds, bank-checks, certificates of stock, tickets, and..similar papers or articles may be numberefi honsecutively, or wherein one or more units may be skipped at pleasure, without changing the numbering-head, or essentially without altering the mechanism of the same; and the further object of the invention is to accomplish the above result without changing the usual position of the numbering-head in the chase.
The invention will be first described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a press having my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the left-hand side of the press. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the right-hand side of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section partially on line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a partial transverse section illustrating the actuating mechanism of the lifting-roll. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a numbering-head, and Fig. 7 is a detail View illustrating the action of the rolls upon the plunger of the numbering-head.
In the device shown as an embodiment of the invention, A and A, respectively, represent the sides of the press, near the upper edges of which sides a rack, a, is secured upon the bed, one rack being located at each side of the upper surface of the same.
B represents the impression-cylinder; C, the feed-board; and C the ink-rollers, which are journaled and located upon the frame in the ordinary manner, the bearings of the said ink-rolls being, however, outside of the racks a.
O is the main shaft of the press, and D a cam mounted upon said shaft, having preferably an elliptical contour, as best shown in Fig. 5.
D represents a chase in position upon the bed of the press, having locked therein numbering-heads D The form of numbering-head employed may be such as is ordinarily used, in which the type is mounted upon sister disks, the said disks being so operated that the type changes its number with each consecutive impression, and in which the movement of the disks is effected through the medium of a plunger, forming a portion of the head, which plunger has heretofore been depressed by the cylinder upon the return of the chase. Such a numbering-head is illustrated in Fig. 6.
Between the ink-rollers and the chase a series of depressors or actuators, preferably in the form of depressing-rolls E, are fixed to revolve, the said rolls being journaled in bearings E, detachably secured to the sides of the press and extending transversely over the bed, as shown in Fig. 1. The several depressing-rolls are provided with one or more annular collars, 6, adapted to engage the plunger of the numbering-head, and pinions e, integral with one end, purposed to travel upon the racked surface a. One or more of the rolls E are journaled at each end in a box, 6 secured upon the upper end of a perpendicular rod, c which rod is adapted to reciprocate in a vertical slot, 8, produced in the respective bearings E.
Preferably upon the left side of the press a perpendicular shaft, F, is held to reciprocate in brackets f and f, and to the said shaft spaced fingers f f are secured, which fingers extend inward, one above and the other below the cam D, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The fingers are held in a predetermined fixed position by a coil or spiral spring, F, attached to an ear formed upon the upper bracket and to the lower finger at its point of intersection with the said shaft F.
Forward of the reciprocating shaft F a short rigidly secured to the reciprocating shaft F, which collar is united with a horizontal crankarm, h, 011 a transverse shaft, H, by a connecting-rod, If, the shaft H being provided with a similar lever, h, on the opposite side of the frame, and the said levers are connected by a link, 70, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with the crank-arms g. At the left side of the frame the lever h is normally held in a horizontal position by a spring, K.
The cam D may be so calculated as to elevate the fingers f f at any predetermined time,thereby, through the connection above set forth, elevating the roll or rolls fitted in the boxes 6 Sufficient room is left between the impression-cylinder and the auxiliary or depressing rolls for one or two ink-rollers, and, as above set forth, one or more of the depressing-rollers maybe employed; but the said rollers are in every case preferably located between the impression-cylinder, the ink-rollers, and the nearest point of the chase to insure all the numbering-heads passing completely under and slightly beyond the auxiliary rollers. The ink-rollers are grooved, as shown at m, to admit the passage of the said numbering-head.
In general, I desire it to be understood that although a specific construction has been described other equivalent constructions may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. I also desire it to be understood that I do not claim as my invention any feature of the numbering-head illustrated. I propose using any numbering-head best adapted to the purpose, preferably those provided with different units-wheels to form any combination of numbers.
In operation, when the numbering-heads, for instance, are locked in the form, the full number of depressingq'ollers placed in position, and the lifting mechanism of the depressingrollers being out of action, the press is set in motion, and the bed is allowed to pass under the impression-cylinder. Upon the return of the bed the units-wheel will be moved over by the action of the said impression-cylinder, then by the action of the first depression-roller, then by the second depressing roller, and again by the third roller. In the second forward movement of the bed of the press the numbering-head is depressed by the third roller and again by the second and then by the first depression roller, whereupon the said numbering-head passes under the impression cylinder for an impression to be taken. In the above operation prior to the impression being made seven units will have been turned.
It is manifest if the units-wheels were arranged to skip three numbers, for instance, at each depression of the plunger of the numbering-head, that before the impression is taken twenty-one numbers will have been skipped.
If the lifting mechanism is thrown into action, raising the third roller upon the forward movement of the bed and permitting the same to act upon the numbering-head upon the backward movement of the bed only, one number less will be skipped.
Any number of rollers may be inserted or removed according to the number of units to be skipped or the arrangement of the figures upon the units-wheels.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent? 1. The combination, in aprinting-press, with impression-cylinder, the bed, the numberingheads, and their operating mechanism, of an auxiliary depressor or actuator in the path of the said head-operating mechanism to actuate it independently of the impression-cylinder, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a printing-press, with the impression-cylinder, the bed, the numbering-heads, and their operating mechanism, of auxiliary depressors or actuators in the path of said head-operating mechanism,and mechanism, substantially as described, for automatically moving one of the said depressors or actuators out of the path of the head-operating mechanism as the bed is moved in one direction, substantially as set forth.
3. In a printing-press, the combination, with 'numberingheads, their operating mechanisms, and the impression-cylinder, of a series of transverse depressing-rolls journaled in advance of said cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In a printing-press, the combination, with the numbering-heads, their operating mechanism, and the impression-cylinder, of a series of transverse depressing or actuating rollers to one side of the cylinder in the path of the said head-operating mechanism, vertically-movable bearings for one of said rollers, and a cam for automatically raising said bearings and the roller carried thereby when the numbering-heads are moved away from the cylinder, substantially as set forth.
5. Inaprinting-press, the combination, with numbering-heads provided with units-wheels, and a plunger operating the same, of a series of depressing-rolls j ournaled in advance of the cylinder, and collars upon said rolls engaging the plunger of numbering-heads, one of said rollers being vertically movable, and a cam for automatically raising said roller when the heads are carried away from the cylinder, as and for the purposes specified.
