' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE sMIfrI-I vAN wOERT, OE oATsKILL, NEw YORK.
SAM PLE-ENVELOPL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 400,524, dated April 2, 1889.
`Application filed February 28, 1888. Serial No. 265,617. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, t my concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE SMITH VAN WOERT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Catskill, in the county of Greene and State of New York, .have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sample-Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a sample-envelope and price-list; and it consists, essentially, in an envelope to contain samples, which is provided with a peculiar and simple securing device, and, furthermore, in certain novel details Ofconstruction and arrangement of parts fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device in its closed position. Fig.'
2 is a similar view in its open position, and one or two'of the samples raised to display the price. Fig. 3 isa transverse sectional view on the line a: of Fig. l. Fig. 4L is a detail view of a pair of points or spurs.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the envelope, which comprises the main fold B, the tapered end flaps, C O, which are adapted to fold inward over the main fold, the lower flap, D, which folds upward over the end iiaps, and the covering-Hap E, which folds downward over the end flaps and the lower flap.
It will be observed that the points or spurs are arranged in pairs, two points or spurs be ing formed from a single` piece of wire, the ends of which project outward beyond the strip K and are sharpened, while the central or connecting portion, g, is arranged in rear of the strip.
F F represent clips, which are attached to the lower edge of the covering-flap, and they engage under the lower edge of the main fold, and thus secure the free edges of the covering-hap and the main fold together.
G G represent pliable spurs or points, which are attached to a strip, K, which is secured to the main fold near its upper edge by the eyelets L, and on these spurs or points are suspended samples H I-I of fabric. The spurs or points are bent over after the samples are placed thereon, so as to enable thev coveringflap to lie at.
Directly below the several pairs of spurs or points are arranged the prices per yard of the fabrics from which the samples are taken, and any other information, as the width, dre., whichv may be of importance.
It will be apparent 'thatwhen the envelope is closed the samples are protected and may be carried about without being injured, and they may be exposed for inspection by simply disengaging the lower edge of the main fold from the clips. It will be understood that the clips or hooks are not designed to be bent to disengage them; but the main fold is looped,
' as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The envelope may be made of any shape, size, and material; but the arrangement of folds and flaps herein described is considered the most convenient and desirable. The strip carrying the spur or points may be pasted to the main fold instead of being secured as shown in the drawings and above described.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The envelope having the main fold B, lower iiap, D, and covering-ap'E connected to the upper edge of the main fold, combined with the pliable spurs or points G, secured to the main fold near its upper edge to engage samples of fabrics, the lower iiap, D, being adapted to fold upward over the lower ends of the said samples, substantially as specified.
2. In a sample-envelope, the. main fold provided with a lower flap, D, and side flaps, C C, and having pliable points or spurs G, attached thereto, and the covering-Hap E, closing over the main fold and covering the said iaps D and C, combined with the clips or hooks F, secured to the free edge of the covering-flap and engaging the lower edge of the main fold, sub-` GEORGE SMITH VAN WOERT.
