LAM P-SHADE PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 400,372, dated March 26, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GUsTAvE A. TANK, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Shade Protectors; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to that class of protectors for lamp and gas shades and lobes in which a shield of some indestructlble but translucent material such as micads interposed between the shade or globe and the lamp or gas flame; and my invention consists in the constructions and combinations of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

The object of my invention is to provide simple and practical means for applying the protector.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view showing my protector in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.

A is a gas or lamp fixture having the burners a.

B is the shade or globe, which is supported from the fixture in the usual manner by means of a top ring, 0, encircling the flanged top of the shade, and set by screws 0. The ring 0 is supported by radial arms D, which unite in a ring-hub, d, fitted upon the top or stem of the fixturesA and secured bya nut, a.

E is the protector, consisting of a ring of transparent or translucent material, such as mica, which, while indestructible, does not obstruct the passage of the light. This ring of mica may be made either integral or in sections, as may be found most practicable. The top of the protector is secured to a metal ring, F, which has made in its upper portion the L- shaped slots f.

To apply the protector, it is passed up inside of the shade until its supporting-ring F projects through and above the top of the shade. The leg portions of the L-shaped slots fpass up by the radial arms D of the shadesupporting ring 0, and when fully up the protector is turned axially, so as to pass the horizontal base portions of the L-shaped slots along the radial arms D. Then the protector is relieved and the small end portions of the slots f drop down over the arms, thus securing the protector in place between the shade and flame. In this position it saves the shade from undue heat or sudden variations of temperature, and thus prevents breakage. The projection of the metal ring F into and through the top of the shade affords protection to the upper portion of said shade without interfer= ing with the light.

I am aware that a protector of mica is not broadly new in this connection, and I do not claim such; but

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the shade or globe, the protector E, of translucent or transparent materialsuch as mica-and the metal ring F, to which the protector is secured by its top, said ring passing up into and through the top of th e shade, substantially as herein described.

2. I11 combination with the shade or globe and its supporting-ring with arms, the protector E, of translucent or transparent materialsuch as mica-the metal ring F, secured to the top of the protector, anda connection between the arms of the shade-supporting ring and the metal ring of the protector, substantially as herein described.

In combination with the shade or globe and its supporting-ring with arms, the protector E, of translucent or transparent material-such as mica-and the metal ring F, secured to the top of the protector and having the L-shaped slots f, whereby it may be suspended from the arms of the shade-holding ring, substantially as herein described.

4. The protector for lamp and gas shades or globes, consisting of a ring of mica having a metal ring secured to its top, in which said metal ring are made L-shaped slots, whereby the protector may be suspended from the shade or globe holding frame, substantially as herein described.
