L. M. MILLER-.1
VEHICLE HUB.-
No. 409,054. Patented AugQlS.' 1889..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDVIC M. MILLER, OF VVINNECONNE, VISCONSIN.
VEHICLE-HUB.
lS1:ECIIIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,054, dated August 13, 1889. Application filed April 30, 1888. Serial No. 272,381. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDvIc M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ,of VVinneconne, in the county of Vinnebago and State of Visconsin, have invented certain Improvem ents in Hubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specilication.
My invention has reference to sectional hubs; and it consists in the improvedconstruction hereinafter explained and set forth, whereby a hub of simple and comparatively inexpensive character is provided that can be quickly adjusted to retain the'spokes in a staggered and rigid position.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side viev7 of my improved hub, the parts being adjusted. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. l, and Figs. 3 and et are respectively inner and outer views of one of the spokesections.
The main portion or body of the hub consists of an extended sleeve A, which is provided at either side of its center with opposite external screw-threads c Z9. At one or both sides of the sleeve A is formed a longitudinal channel @,Which extends in either direction to the limits of the screw-threads.
It Will be noticed that the screw-threads do not extend to the ends of the cylinder, but terminate to leave plane-surfaced ter1ninal portions CZ d.
B C designate two annular metal sections, which are centrally perforated to pass upon the sleeve, and are each provided with an in ternal horizontal lug e, designed to .engage the groove c and prevent any rotation on said sleeve. It will be noticed that the projections e of each section are arranged on the inner side of a portion forming a boss D, upon the outer periphery of which are arranged a regular series of segmental projectionsE,Whicl1tapertowardtheirlowerportions and form between their adjacent faces rectangular recesses f, adapted to form sockets for the reception of the spoke-tenons. As will be seen, the body of each section B C forms the outer Wall g of each recess. The outer face of each section B C is reamed out adjacent to its perforation, as indicated by 7i, to form a recess for the reception of a corresponding-shaped portion t of a clamp-nut F, which is internally threaded and provided With a polygonal portion for the engagement of a wrench.
It will be understood that the projections E of the section B alternate With those of the section C, so as to form a .corresponding alternate series of spokesockets arranged in different vertical planes in regard to the line of the tire. In practice the spokes are fitted to each section and their outer ends inserted in the tireerecesses. The sections B C are then forced into contact with each other, so as to rigidly brace the spokes, and
are clamped in such position through the medium of the clamping-nuts F. By Inaking the sections B C of corresponding form and size their outer walls G, two adjacent faces of the projections E, combined with the inner face k of the alternate projections f on the other section, serve to form a socket, in which the tenon is clamped between four faces. By having the sections B C each provided with a reamed portion 7i and each nut F with a corresponding-shaped portion fi, an arrangement is presented that will enable said parts to be always intimate and compensate for wear.
I claiml. The combination, in a sectional hub, of the central longitudinal sleeve provided with the double series of screw-threads, and having a longitudinal channel c, the sections B C, having internal projections to engage said channel, and provided with the alternatelyarranged projections to form alternate spoke-sockets, and outer clamping-nuts, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a sectional hub, of the central longitudinal sleeve screw-threaded and provided with a longitudinal channel, two spoke-sections having internal projections to engage said channel, and having alternating projections to form alternate spoke-sockets, and reamed on their outer faces, and clamping-nuts provided with portions corresponding with said reamed parts, substantially as set forth.
LUDVIG M. MILLER.
