v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM S. CRONK, OF AFOPKA, FLORIDA.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,797, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed January 3 1889. Serial No. 295 ,303. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. CRoNK,a citizen of the United States, residing at Apopka, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVashing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, effective, and convenient machine for washing cloths. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the suds-box.
In the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame, and B the suds-box, preferably of polygonal form, which is pivotally mounted in the upper end of the frame by having stubaxles B fixed at or about the center of its sides, which are journaled in bearings in the frame. To the protruding end of one of the axles B is secured a crank A for rotating the box. When it is desired to oscillate the box instead of rotating it, I removably place an arm O in clasps C', the latter being secured to the side of the box. The arm O extends above the box, and has a handle O2 adj ustably secured in its upper end, which is bifurcated, by a suitable pivot-pin. The upper portion of the suds-box B is formed with a neck D, which is open at its top. E represents the cover for closing the opening, it being held in place by catches or buttons e, located on the edge of the neck. On the inside of the suds-box B, at the point of union of the sides and neck, are secured two downwardly-inclined delectors F, one on each side, they projecting out into the interior of the box for a short distance, thereby 'somewhat obstructing the opening.
. Rigidly secured transversely on the sides of the interior of the box is a series of U- shaped abrading-cleats G, which are arranged alternately in series of four and three, aspace being left between/the respective series, in which spaces are secured V-shaped pieces II, they occupying the entire space in each case and projecting beyond the U-shaped pieces. The bottom of the box has a large V-shaped projection H', extending up into the box, and has openings 7L therein, through Which the suds pass. K is a discharge-opening formed in the lower part of the front of the box B, and communicating with the interior below the part H.
.To prevent the box from moving, I secure a hook L to the frame, which is adapted to be placed in the eye L on the box.
' By the above-described construction it will be readily seen that a very efficient machine is produced, the complete abrading of the cloths being accomplished by their coming in contact with the pieces G, II, and II', the
delectors F preventing the cloths from being forced into the neck against the top, their inclination admitting a free insertion of the goods.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the frame A, of the polygonal suds-box B, pivotally secured in the top thereof, having neck D and the deflectors F, the transverse U-shaped pieces G, and the V-shaped pieces II and the V-shaped piece II', substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVIIILIAM S. CRONK.
