STEAM-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,176, dated. July 30, 1889.

To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV J. GRAEBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Traps; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
lillyinven'tion relates to certain new and usef ul improvements in steam-traps, and has for its objects, first, an improved trap for discharging the condensed water to a tank, sewer, or waste-pipe, and, second, certain modifications of the device, whereby the condensed water may be returned to a boiler, the trap in its essential features being thus adapted for high or low pressure.
I carry out my invention as more fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a device embodying my invention, showing the outlet-valve closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the relation of parts when the outlet-valve is opened. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification adapting the trap for the return of the condensed water to a boiler against steam-pressure.
I accomplish my invention as follows:
A represents a con(lensing-chamber of any suitable construction, the case A of said chamber being of any desired-form and arrangement.
Bis the inlet-pipe leading to the steampipe to be trapped, and preferably provided on the inner end with a downwardly extended or pointed nozzle 12.
(1 denotes the dischargepipe. The inletpipe is preferably led into the condensingchamber toward the top thereof, and the discharge-pipe is led therefrom toward the base, as shown.
D indicates avalve, of any suitable description, located within the dischargepipe and within the condensing-chamber and provided with a valve-stem cl. As shown, the valve consists of a double-seated valve.
E is a supporting-arm, which may be conveniently engaged upon the valve-case. An inner receiving-basin F, provided with a weighted arm F, is journaled upon the supporting-arm, as shown at f, said arm being e11- gaged with the valve-stem to open and close the valve with the tilting of the arm and basin. The basin is arranged to receive the condensed water through the inlet-pipe B, and is provided with an outlet f and controlling- Valve f of any proper construction. In this instance, as shown, said controlling-valve is provided with an extended stem f which may be provided, in turn, with a pin f, to prevent the dislocation of the valve.
The operation of my invention as so far described will be readily understood. The condensed water enters the basin F and is received therein until its weight overbalanc'es the weight upon the arm F, when the basin descends, the stem of the controlling-valve striking the base of the receiving or condensing chamberA. Simultaneously the rear end of the arm F is lifted, thereby opening the valve D, permitting the water to discharge through the pipe 0. The casing A may be provided with a discharge-opening and removable stopper a, to effect the thorough emptying of the condensing-chamber, when desired. In case the water from the condensing-chamber is to be returned to the boiler, I locate within the discharge-pipe a suitable check-valve G, and also a suitable check valve II in the inlet-pipe to prevent anybaek action of steam-pressure from the boiler. I prefer, moreover, for such an obj ect to locate within the discharge-pipe or valve-casing connected therewith a conical pipe I, while the said pipe is also provided with an inlet-opening 0. A live-steam pipe J is led to the casing of the valve D. It will be apparent thus that when the basin is tilted and the valve D opened live steam will rush past the valve and through the conical pipe I, causing a suction through the opening 0, whereby the condensed water will be forced or drawn from the condensing-chamber, the pressure upon the check-valve G being equalized. The construction is simple and economical, and not liable to easily get out of order.
The check-valves G and H, together with the live-steam pipe and conical pipe I, may
or may not be employed within the scope of my invention. The conical pipe I serves to discharge the steam into the discharge-pipe in a jet over the inlet 0, thereby effectually producing the results described.
WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a steam-trap, the combination, with the condensing-chamber provided With an inlet and a discharge pipe, of a valve located in the discharge-pipe, and a tilting receiving-basin engaged to operate said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-trap, th e combination, With the condensing-chamber provided Withan inlet and a discharge pipe, of a valve controlling communication through the discharge-pipe and provided With a valve-stem, and a tilting receiving-basin provided With a Weighted arm engaged With said valve-stem, said basin provided with an outlet and controlling valve, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam-trap, the combination, with a condensing-chamber provided with an inlet and a discharge pipe, of a valve D, to control communication through the discharge-pipe, a tilting receiving-basin engaged to operate said Valve, a live-steam pipe communicating with the discharge-pipe through said valve, and a check-valve G, located in the discharge-pipe, substantially as set forth.
4. In a steam-trap, the combination, with the condensing-chamber provided with an inlet and a discharge pipe, of a valve D, to control communication through the discharge-pipe, a tilting receiving-basin engaged to operate said valve, check-valves G and H, located in the discharge and inlet pipes, respectively, and a live-steam pipe communicating with the discharge-pipe through the valve D, substantially as set forth.
5. In a steam-trap, the combination, with the condensing-chamber provided With an inlet and a discharge pipe, of a valve D, to control communication through the dischargepipe, a tilting receiving-basin engaged to opcrate said valve, a live-steam pipe communicating with the discharge-pipe through the valve D, said discharge-pipe provided With an inlet-opening, a conical point, and a checkvalve G, substantially as described.
