Description
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
FREDERICK BECK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,80I, dated December 1, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Covering (lords or WVires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to cover metal wires, such as generally used in the manufacture of hoop-skirts, bonnets, artificial flowers, and other articles, with some material cheaper than cotton braid or strips of paper, or other materials tiow employed for this purpose, and also covering cords made of cotton or other fibrous materials.
The invention consists in the employment or use of flock or powder obtained by grinding woolen rags, worsted cotton, or paper, or of hronze powder, or other material ground to an impalpable powder, for the purpose of covering metal, wire, or cords, by drawing the wire or cord first through a solution of glue, gumarabic, or other suitableliquid cement, and atterward through the flock or powder, and removing the surplus by rollers or brushes or other suitable means.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to-describe it.
The wire or cord to be covered is taken from the ring, bale, or roll; or it may be covered after it has been cut in pieces of any desirable length. In most cases, however, it is preferable to cover the wire or cord before cutting,
and the operation of covering may be performed as follows: I placeiu a vat a quantity of cement, such as glue or gum-arable dissolved in water or varnish, or any other suitder, and, finally, in order to remove the surplus the wires or cords may be exposed to the action of rollers or brushes, or the surplus flock or powder may be removed simply by friction, or in any other convenient manner. By these means metal wire or cord of any description, whether of steel, iron, brass, copper, or other metal, or cord of any description can be covered with flock or powder of any desirable color. The whole operation can be performed at a trifling expense in labor or stock, and certainly much cheaper than it can be done in the ordinary manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment or use of flock or powder obtained by grinding woolen, worsted, or cotton rags or paper, or other material, in combination with a solution of glue or other suitable cement, for the purpose of covering cords or wires, substantially as set forth.
- FR. BECK.
