000K FOR SELF LIGHTING GAS FUEL BURNERS.
BIO-401884 I Patented July so, 1889.

ATENT OFFICEQ LOUIS P. WILLING AND CHARLES'F. KIEFER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA; SAID KIEFER ASSIGNOR TO SAID WILLING.
COCK FOR SELF-LIGHTING GAS-FUEL BURNERSN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,884, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed December 1, 1888. Serial No. 292,413. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs P. WILLING and CHARLES F. KIEFER, citizens of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cocks for Self-Lighting Gas-Fuel Burners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- I0 vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acco mpanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forininga part of this specification.
Our invention consists in the improve men ts in cocks for self-lighting gas-fuel burners hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a View in elevation of our improved. cock and connections. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of the valve removed from its seat.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The object of our invention is to construct.
In the side of the body A is an opening E,
0 in which the main pipe F, leading to the burner, is secured. In the body A is also made a small collar G, preferably at right angles to the opening E, in which the pipe H, leading to the supplementary lightingj et, is secured. 5 The valve I, operating in the body A, is made in the form of a hollow plug-valve, filling into its seat in 'the body A with a ground joint, so as to make it gas-tight. The hollow portion of the valve I extends from the lower end a of the valve upward into the valve above the point at which the pipe H is secured in the and from this opening d is a small annular groove e in the outside of the valve I, which extends about one-fourth of the way around the valve, as andfor the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Near the lower end of the hollow valve I, opposite the opening E in the cock-body A, is another larger opening f, so that when the valve I is turned around so as to bring the openings f and E opposite to each other the gas flows freely from the supply-pipe D through the valve I and pipe F to the burner, the opening din the valve I being at this time turned around so as to be closed. W'hen, however, the handle J of the valve I is moved around to the right one-fourth of a 7c turn, the openingf is shut off and the opening at opened, the groove 6 operating to let on the gas to the pipe H before the turning of the valve I quite closes the opening f therein, so that before the gas flowing from the pipe F is shut off, and thus extinguished, the gas is supplied through the small pipe H and lighted before the burner is extinguished. If, however, it is desired to entirely shut oif the gas from both of the pipes F and H at the same time, this is accomplished by turning the valve I around to the right another quarter-turn, as shown by the dotted lines K in Fig. 2. In this manner the gas-supply to the gas-fuel burner through the pipe F can be entirely shut off and the supplementary lighting-supply of gas simultaneously turned on through the small pipe H, so as to retain a small lighting-jet at all times at the fuelburner for relighting the same; or, when desired, the entire supply can be altogether turned off-.
The valve I is held in place in the body A by means of a beveled collar L on the upper portion thereof being retained in a corre- 5 sponding beveled groove N formed between the upper end of the body A and the screwcap M fitting thereon, this cap being adjustable, so as to tighten or loosen the valve in its seat at pleasure.
Having thus fully described our invention, so as to enable others to construct and use In testimony whereof We affix our signatures 1c in presence of two Witnesses.
LOUIS P. WILLING. CHARLES F. KIEFER.
