UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I lVATSON S. LENNON, OF HARDINSBURG, KENTUCKY.
WIRESPLICING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,782, dated July 30, 1889. Application filed May 20, 1889- Serial No. 311,383. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WATSON S. LENNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardinsburg, in the county of Breckenridge and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Splicing Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in wiresplicing tools; and my said invention consists of a novel form of tool for connecting the ends of wire fencing, telegraph and other wires, as and for the purposes as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and form the subject-matter of the annexed claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient implement whereby the operation of making connection of the ends of wire may be quickly and securely effected; and to this end I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings for a better understanding of the details of construction and operation of the parts, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of a wire-splicing tool constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a view of the wire as spliced.
The tool is composed of a body or main jaw A, having a handle A, a pivoted jaw B, and locking-latch C. The jaw B is pivoted at 1) within the part A, and beneath the outer end of this jaw B is arranged a spring D, whereby said jaw is held in contact with the jaw A. One end of the jaw B is beveled, as at b, to facilitate the entrance between the jaws of the wire to be spliced, and at this end of said jaw B are formed grooves b into which said wire is placed.
0 is a latch or spring-bolt that is hinged at c to the jaw A and provided with a handle 0' and a spring 0 This latch C engages the rear end of the pivoted jaw B, and is so held in engagement with said jaw by the spring 0 Opposite the grooves 19 of the jaw B in the part A of the implement is a slot a, which slot, in connection with the said grooves 19 of the jaw B, forms the recess into which the wires to be spliced are received, and at the bottom of the slot a is a grooved plate 11 adjustable by a set-screw b whereby the implement is adapted to receive wires of different sizes.
E is a grooved stud arranged at the side of the implement adjacent the recess therein that receives the ends of the wire being spliced, the end of one of said wires being bent at a right angle to its length and over the stud E, as in Fig. 2, whereby as the implement is turned around the wires to form the splice said end of the wire is held by the stud in position against the other wire to eifect the coupling. i
The operation is as follows: Pressure upo the handle 0 of the latch releases the bolt C thereof from engagement with the pivoted jaw B, and permits the mouth of said jaw B to open to receive the wire to be spliced. Upon releasing the pressure upon the said handle of the latch, the bolt again engages the outer end of jaw B, which has been returned to its normal position after the passage of the Wire into its month by the spring D, and holds the same in position upon the wire. The implement is now revolved around the wire and the connection made in the usual manner.
This implement may be used in connection with the Mclntire connector, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wiresplicing tool composed of the handled body A A, with recess a, short jaw B, pivoted to the body A and having a beveled and recessed mouth 1) b spring D, and spring locking-bolt O C, as described, for the purposes specified.
2. In a wire-splicing tool of the nature described, in combination with the handled body A A, with recess a, and short pivoted jaw B, with recess W, of the recessed plate 5 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in and set-screw 17 as described, for the purpresence of two Witnesses. poses specified. v
3. A tool for splicing wire, composed of a WATSON S. LENNON. 5 handled body with a recess, short spring-jaw pivoted to said body, a latch engaging said Witnesses: short pivoted jaw, and a stud E, substantially WILLIAM H. BELL, as described, for the purposes specified. ALEX. WVEsT.
