Description

(No Model.)
0 & HS m U MR T R .F GL I A N No. 407,468. Patented July 23, 1889.1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CROUCH, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
NAIL FOR TRUNKS, 806.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,468, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed April 15, 1889. Serial No. 307,231. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be itknown that I, GEORGE CROUCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nails for Trunks, Furniture, 850.; and the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Nails for trunks furniture, &c., have heretofore been made with a compressed leather or composition head, the head of the metal nail being inserted in an incision in the leather or composition before the same was compressed; and nails have also been made with heads composed of a leather or composition button and a metal disk connected thereto by an overturned edge, the nail proper in this case being removable from the disk and head.
My invention consists of the combination, in a nail, of a convex compressed leather or vulcanized fiber head, having a recess on the under side, with the metal nail, the head of which is within the recess, and a metal disk having a central hole for the nail and a turned-over edge grasping the edge of the leather or fiber head and confining the metal nail-head and uniting the parts securely and rigidly together.
In the drawings, Figure, 1 is an elevation of my improved nail, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections of nails made according to my improvement.
a represents the head of the trunk or furniture nail, the same being a convex circular disk or button, of leather or vulcanized fiber, compressed and stamped up to shape, and having a recess at a upon the under or flattened side.
The circular metal disk is threaded upon the nail, and the head or button, of leather or fiber, is placed upon the head 1), against the surface of the metal disk, and the parts are securely held together with any suitable tools while the edge of the metal disk 0 is turned over against the edge of the button or disk a, and the parts are thus secured together. g
The nail-head in Fig. 2 is made flat on the under side, and the shank b is slender and adapted for light work, while the nail-head in. Fig. 3 is made concave on the under side, and the shank b is heavy and adapted for heavy work and for tight driving, that the circular edge of the disk may grip the articles held by the nail.
I claim as my invention- The trunk or furniture nail composed of the circular disk or button a, of compressed leather or vulcanized fiber, having a recess on the under side, the metal nail having a head integral therewith, and the disk 0, perforated for the nail to pass through and having a turned; over edge by which the parts are united and held together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of April, A. D.
GEO. CROUCH. Witnesses:
