Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES OHINNOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORKSCREWS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,674, dated November 24, 1863.
To all whom it may concern'.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES CHINNOCK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corkscrews, Giinlets, and Similar' Tools which are rotated in using them; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, making a part ot' this specification, iu which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the tube or handle ot' my invention, shown in connection with a corkscrew, the device being adjusted ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the tube or handle with the corkscrew adjusted into it. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ot' my invention, shown as a screw-driver, adjusted ready for use.
Similar letters otA reference indicate corresponding parts in the severa-l figures.
The object ot' this invention` is to construct a corkscrew, gimlet, screw-driver, or other tool which is turned in using it in such. a manner that its handle will serve as a case to receive the tool when not in use and render the same capable of beingcarried in the pocket without any inconvenience, and at the same time be capable ot' being manufactured at a small cost and without having any of its parts detachable.
To this end the invention consists in having the handle formed of a tube and slotted longitudinally at two opposite points, said tube having a slide fitted within it, to which the shank of the tool is attached by a joint, and all arranged in such a manner that the tool, When not required for use, may be shoved within the handle, and when required for use drawn out from the handle and turned at right angles therewith, as 4hereinafter fully set t'orth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a tube, which I design to construct ot' sheet metal, swa-ged into properform, closed at one end and open at the other, and having two longitudinal slots, a b, made in it at opposite points ot' its periphery, one slot, a', extending nearly the. whole length ofthe tube,
ltrrminating a short distance from each end of It, and the other slot, b, extending from one end of the tube to a point a trifling distance beyond its center, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. Within this tube Athere is fitted a slide, B, ot' cylindrical form, and having a pin, c, pro jecting from it, which passes through the slit a, and to one end of said slide' the shank e ot' the corkscrew C or other tool is attached by a joint, f. This joint admits of the corkscrew or other tool heilig adjusted in line with the slide B, as shown in red in Fig. 1, or adjusted at right angles with it, as shown in shaded blue tint. When the corkscrew is turned or adjusted in linel with the slide B, the former maybe shoved entirely within the case or tube A, as shown in Fig. 2, and by drawing out the corkscrew from the case or tube A until the pin c strikes the edge of the slot a the corkscrew may be turned at right angles with the slide, and the latter shoved back within the case or tube until the shank e strikes against the inner end ofthe slot b. In this adjustment of the corkscrew the latter is in a condition for use, the case or tube A serving as the handle. By this arrangement it will be seen that none ofthe parts require to be detached in adjusting the tool. They are all connected, and remain so in adjusting the tool Within its case and in adjusting it for use at the outer side of the case.
The device may be carried in the pocket without any inconvenience whatever, may be constructed at a moderate cost, and none of the parts can be mislaid or lost, as is frequently the case with similar devices which are composed ot' detachable-parts.
My invention is applicable to various tdols, such as corkscrevs, gimlets, screw-drivers, tuningkeys for piano-fortes, &c. In fact, it is applica-ble to all tools which are turned in using them. In Fig. 3 a screw-driver, D, is shown attached to the slide.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The case or tube A, provided with the slots a b, in connection with the slide B, provided with a pin, c, tted in the slot a of the caso,
and the corkscrew C or other tool attached to the slide by a joint, f, substantially as herein set forth.
OH S. OHINNOOK.
II/itnesses J. W. GooMBs, DANIEL RoBERTsoN.
