GOMBINED CORSET AND BREAST PAD. No. 406,491. Patented July 9,1889;
W LD w 0 Sam 141300 film/W 0 g I M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY A. WILLIAMS, or KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
COMBINED CORSET AND BREAST-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,491, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed April 1, 1889. Serial No. 305,596. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Corsets and Breast-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined corsets and breast-pads.
The object is to provide a set of breastpads which are used in combination with a set of corsets of peculiar construction.
A further object is to provide a set of breast-pads which shall be pleasant to wear and which will readily adapt themselves to the person of the wearer and present an outward appearance such as a well-developed natural bust would present.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents one of the breast-pads in position in the peculiarly-formed corset, the companion pad and fastening-straps being omitted to show the construction of the corset. Fig. 2 represents a Set of the pads detached from the corset, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse section through one of the breast-pads.
A represents a set of corsets provided at the upper portion of the front with cut-away portion, as shown at a, at points in front of the positions of the breasts of the wearer, and provided along the margin of said cutaway portions with a series of eyelets a.
B represents one of a pair of similarlyconstructed breast-pads. The pads B are hemispherical in form and are constructed of some suitable elastic material, preferably of rubber. The material of which the pad is constructed is intended to be thick enough to hold its shape and to return to its shape when from any cause it has been pressed out of shape and the pressure removed. The
pads are not inflated, and are provided with manifold perforations b to render them cool and pleasant to the wearer. For the purpose of affording a convenient means of fastening the pads to the corset or dress, and for the further purpose of giving the base of the pad an extended bearing upon the body of the wearer to render it easy, I provide the pads with a laterally outwardly-extending flange b around the margin of the base. Through this flange b, I form eyelet holes I) as a convenient means of fastening the pad to the corset or dress. I find it convenient to secure the pad to the corset by a soft fine piece of tape or cord 0, run in and out through said eyelets. I further find it convenient to secure the pads to each other by one or more elastic straps or cords D, and also to provide the upper edges of the pads with shoulderstraps d, which may be fastened at the back to the back of the corset, or, in case the corsets are not worn, to the dress-waist, the lower edges of the pads being in such case also attached to the dress-waist in front.
By cutting away that portion of the corset which commonly occupies a position in front of the breast-pad the overheating due to an exclusion of the air from the pad and an additional thickness of material is avoided, and, furthermore, the breast-pad will present a much more comely and natural appearance beneath the dress than where it is distorted or interfered with by the top ofthe corset.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a corset having cut-away portions opposite the breasts of the wearer and provided with eyelet-holes in the marginal walls of the cut-away portions, of hollow hemispherical perforated pads formed with a laterally-projecting flange I), having eyelet-holes registering with the eyelet-holes of the corset, tape or cord passed through each series of eyelet-holes for securing the the portions opposite the breasts of the wearer cut away and provided with a series of eye- In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in IQ let-holes, of pads having laterally-projecting presence of two witnesses. flanges provided with eyelet-holes registering with the eyelet-holes of the corsets, the said MARY A. WILLIAMS.
5 flanges seated behind the margins of the cutaway portions of the corsets, and a tape or VVit-nesses: cord laced through the eyelet-holes of the cor- BESSIE E. YOUNG, sets and flanges of the pads, substantially as I XVM. J MOYER. set forth.
