EDW'ARD F. SCHNEIDER, OF RAOINE, WVISCONSIN.
SPLIT PU LLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,237, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed January 28, 1889. Serial No. 297,856. (No model.)
'To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. SCHNEIDER, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Split Pulley, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a pulley which may be applied to a shaft without removing such shaft from its bearings and to the end named the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts mall the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved split pulley. Fig. 2 is a side view of a modified construction, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a side view of the pulley. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line so a: of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 3 y of Fig. 4..
In the drawings, 10 and 10 are central castings, each formed with a semicircular recess, so that when the two castings are united they will fit closelyupon the shaft to which they may be held by set-screws, or the central bore may be larger and the castings may be set upon the shaft by means of a suitable bushing. The castings 10 and 10. are each formed with sockets 11, adapted to receive arms or spokes 12, the outer ends of which are rabbeted to fit in grooves formed in the rim-sections 13, said rim-sections being built up of strips or segments that are placed face to face and secured together in any suitable way, whereby a rim that will not be affected by. dampness is produced.- The outer ends of the spokes or arms 12 are connected to the rims 13 by screws 14, (see Fig.
5,) and the castings 10 and 10 and the arms supportedthereby are held together by bolts 15, which pass through the castings and through the inner ends of the arms. Metal plates 16 are secured to the abutting ends of the rim-sections 13 by screws 2, other screws 3 being passed through the plates to engage the arms or spokes 12.
In pulleys of large diameter, where it is found necessary to support the rim-sections 13, I form the castings 10 and 10 with flanges 17, and between these flanges I bolt auxiliary arms or spokes 12, the outer ends of said arms or spokes being tenoned to fit into mortises formed in the rim-sections.
As'thc bolts 15 and the nuts which they engage bear against metal, it will be seen that their grip upon the shaft will not be loosened even though the wood from which the arms or spokes 12 are formed should shrink. t
. By providing the plates 16 I firmly unite the rim-sections and prevent all racking strains, and by forming the rim-sections as described I am enabled to use the pulley in damp places.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A two-part pulley comprising a central part or hub formed in two sections, arms sup ported by said sections face to face, rim-sections secured at their ends to the ends of said arms, and plates connected to the abutting ends of the rim-sections and to the arms to join the two pulley-sections, substantially as set forth.
2. A two-part pulley comprising a central part or hub formed in two sections having their adjacent faces provided with half-bearings between their ends and their ends provided with sockets open on thelr inner sides,
the arms resting at their ends in said sockets, the rim-sections secured at their ends to the ends of the arms, bolts connecting the two pulley-sections at the inner ends of the arms, and plates connecting the two pulley-sections at the outer ends of the arms, substantially as set forth.
3. A two-part pulley consisting in the central part or hub in two sections 10 10, each having a half-bearing on its inner face and sockets 11 at its ends, the arms 12 resting in said sockets face to face, the semicircular rimsections 13, secured at their ends to the outer ends of the said arms, and formed of strips secured together side by side, the plates 16, securing the abutting ends of the rim-sections and the outer ends of the arms 12 together, and the bolts 15, passed through the said sockets and inner ends of the said arms, substantially as set forth.
