W. DEMING.
POWDER DUSTING CAN.
Patented June 18; 1889 f ,4 U J Ewan/#1 011.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
\VARREN DEMING, OF EDMESTON, NEIV YORK.
POWDER-DUSTING CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,351, dated June 18, 1889'.
Application filed April 21, 1888. Serial No. 271,414. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN DEMING, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Edmeston, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paris-Greening Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved device for applying paris-green to potatoes.
It has been customary heretofore in applying paris-green to potatoes to mix it thoroughly with sand, plaster, wheat-middlings, flour, slaked lime, or some similar substance in the nature of a dust to act as a distributing medium, and to apply to the potato-vines by dusting or sprinkling it on. This has heretofore been usually done with the hand, or with a tin pail having perforations in its bottom, or some similar device. This has not been as successful a way of applying the paris-green as is desirable, for the reason that it will clog or pack in the receptacle and not pass through the perforations readily, and also for the rea son that what is discharged through the perforations of the device as usually made and used, having no means for directing it afterit passes out of the perforations, is easily blown by any breeze or motion of the air and is not deposited on the vines, as is desired.
It is the object of my invention to overcome the difficulties mentioned.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a side view of my device. Fig. 2 shows acentral vertical section of the device as shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 shows a' central vertical section in a modified form.
In constructing my improvedparis-green canI provide a receptacle 1, of suitable shape and size for the purpose, but which I prefer to construct of tin or some sheet metal and of substantially cylindrical form. The receptacle is provided with a suitable handle or bail 2. Secured in the receptacle in such a position that the lowest point thereof will not extend below the bottom of the cylindrical receptaclel provide a semispherical or conical sieve 3'. The sieve 3 is secured in the receptacle as follows: The receptacle is provided with a groove 4, into which the edge of the sieve is introduced and secured with solder, and a strip 5 within the receptacle covering the groove 4, so as to exclude the contents of the receptacle from the groove. This form of bottom is such that the same amount of parisgreen and its distributing medium may be discharged with less motion than by the other usual devices and without clogging or packing on the sieve.
The lower rim of ,the receptacle extending below the sieve tends to direct the paris-green "and the distributing medium after it has passed through the'sieve, and enables the user of the device to apply the green to better purpose and advantage.
The sieve 3 may be constructed of any material having numerous perforations, and other changes will readily suggest themselves which may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cylindrical can 1, the handle 2 thereof, and the semi-spherical or conical perforated bottom 3, secured in the lower portion of the can by the edge of the bottom entering an encircling groove, and solder and strip 5 covering the groove, the bottom being so located in the can that the lowest point thereof shall be above the line of the bottom of the shell of the can, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VARREN DEMING.
