Description

UNITED STATES oHAELEs WELLM'ATL PATENT .'OrrreE.
oE NEW Yoan, E. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE-SADDLE TREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,524, dated November 3, RC3.
.T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES WELLMAN, ot" the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a'certain new and useful Improvement in Trees or Bodies for Side-Saddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a pe1.-peetive View of such saddle-tree, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan ofthe same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The saddle-tree usually employed for sidesaddles is very liable to break, because the wood cannot be very heavy at the parts joined together by tenons in mortises. Beside this,
the length of the saddle from front to back isl such that when lthe animals back curves downward bythe continuous weight thereon, the saddle rests most heavily at the front and Aback parts in a manner uneasy' for the horse.
c is the ponnnel or horn, and b b the pend# ants or legs taking the girth.
d is a metal strap extending along inside the legs b and across the saddle, and e is another metal strap passing' on the outsideof the saddle up the part b and pomruel, and his a metal strap across the front of the saddle, extending' up inside the pommel, so that the same will be rendered strong and rigid. These straps d, e, and 7L are to be riveted together through the leather body a.
ff are metal straps extending from the strap d along the side portions ot' the body a beneath the same, and riveted to such body a; and g is a nietal plate on the upper side across the back part of the saddle.
It will now be evident that a side-saddle body can be made very light by this construction, and at the saine time is very strong. Only a thin padding or cushion is required under this saddle, and the yielding nature ot' said body allows it to conform to the shape of the'animals back, lthus avoiding the fitting heretofore necessary to make the saddle set properly to the horses back and thisl saddle cannot slip on thehorse, and is not liable to become broken in use.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The saddle-tree or body for side-saddle, form ed of sole-leather, with the metallic straps applied thereto, as specified.
In witness whereotl I have hereunto set my signature this 17th day ot' September, 1863. Witnesses: C. WELLMAN.
