No. 404,540. Patented June 4, 1889..

ing is a specification.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO HOHENSTEIN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
LAM P-SHAD E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,540, dated June 4, 1889.
Serial No. 270,809. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO HOHENSTEIN, of the city, county, and State of NewYorlghave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shades, of which the follow- This invention has reference to an improved shade for incandescent electric lamps, which can also be adapted for use, when made in a larger size, for gas and petroleum lamps, the shade being made of transparent paper, which enables it to be furnished at a very low price, while it forms at the same time a very ornamental shade for the lamps referred to.
The invention consists of a lamp-shade which is composed of a body of transparent paper, the contracted neck of which is re-enforced bya sheet-metal ring, to which is applied an outwardly-bent re-enforcing piece with tapering fingers that serve to retain the bulging shape of the body, the outside of which is ornamented in suitable manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lamp-shade, and Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section of a part of the same drawn on a larger scale and showing the construction of the shade.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the body of my improved lamp-shade, which is made in the shape. of a bell, and preferably provided with a scalloped lower edge. The body A is preferably made of transparent paper that is finished in suitable colors, and preferably ornamented by an exterior layer A of suitable lace-paper at the outside, as shown in Fig. 1. The neck of the body A is applied to asheetmetal ring 0 of ogee form in cross-section. Between the body A and ring C is arranged l an outwardly-bent re-enforcing layer B, of card-board or thin sheet metal, which layer is provided with a number of tapering fingers B at the lower inner end, that serve to retain the bellshaped form of the body A. A layer D, of tissue or other suitable paper, extends from the inner upper edge of the bodyA over the top edge of the ring C, and over the inner surface of the same and partly over the fingers B, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
By properly ornamenting the paper lampshade a very attractive shade is obtained by the same, as it imparts to the electric or other lamps the appearance of illuminated flowers.
The shade can be furnished at comparatively small expense, and forms a very neat and ornamental shade for all kinds of lamps in which no direct flame is used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A lamp-shade consisting of a body having a contracted neck, a ring at the neck, and an outwardly-ben t re-en to rein g layer provided with tapering fingers at the lower inner end, substantially as set forth.
2. A lamp-shade composed of a body having a contracted neck, a ring for re-enforcing said neck, an outwardly-bent layer applied to said ring and provided with tapering fingers, and a covering-layer ext-endin g from the contracted neck of the body over the inner surface of the ring and re-enforcing layer, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IIUGO I-IOHENSTEIN.
