GEORGE HENRY WVAGGONER, OF LESLIE, MICHIGAN.
BEVE-L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,451, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed February 20, 1889- Serial No. 300,552. (No model.)
To all wh'om it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY WAG- GONER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leslie, in the county of Inghain and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bevels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in 'bevels; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bevel embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the bevel folded. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the blade, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the pivot-bolt. I
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the stock of the improved bevel, which is provided with a longitudinal slot, and B designates a semicircular sector, which is centrally mounted on a transverse bolt C in one end of the stock. The free threaded end of this bolt is engaged by a thumb-nut, which, when tightened, clamps the said sector in any desired position. The sector operatesin the slot of the stock and fits at its curved edge against a concaved shoulder b within the slot. i
D designates a sliding or adjustable blade having a longitudinal slot. (1, which receives the bolt 0 and slides on projections or guides E E, which are struck up from diametricallyopposite points of the periphery of the sector. The outer end of the blade is beveled, as shown at d, to fit against a beveled shoulder a at the outer end of the slot a in the stock.
The stock is provided near the inner end (or the end in which the sector is mounted) with a beveled opening F, through which the graduations on the sector maybe viewed, and in this opening are arranged the outer index G, which points to an inner series of graduations on the sector, and an outer index H, which points t an outer series of graduations on the sect'br.
The outer series of graduations 011 the sector indicate the degrees of a circle, and they commence at zero at the center of the are and extend in both directions therefrom, and the inner series of graduations denote the angles at which to arrange the arms of the square in cutting the ends of timbers for ordinary hip and valley roofs, whereby the desired joints are formed. Fractions and letters are em-' ployed to indicate the relations between the base and elevation of a hip or gable and the angles at which'the ends of the timbers used therein must be cut.
In Fig. 3 the blade is shown folded within the stock, the device in this condition being neat and portable and adapted to be carried in the pocket.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1 1. In a bevel, the combination, with a longitudinally slotted stock, of the sector mounted in one end of the slot and the slotted blade sliding on np-struck projections on the sector and adapted to fold within the slot of the stock, substantiallyas specified.
2. In a bevel, the combination, with a longitudinally slotted stock provided with a beveled opening and the indices arranged in the said opening, of the sectorB, mounted on anadiusting-bolt near one end of the slot of the stock and provided with graduations suitably inscribed, which travel under the said .indices, and the slotted blade sliding on projections on the sector, substantially as specified.
3. In a bevel, the combination, with the longitudinally-slotted stock provided with a beveled opening and the indices G and H, arranged in said opening, of the sector B, pivoted in the free end of said slot and provided with two series of graduations, one marking the degrees of a circle and the other marking.
roof and other timber angles, and the blade D, carried by said sector, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Vitnesses:
WM. I-Iorcumes,
L. D. MARTIN.
