SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,231, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed September 18, 1888- Serial No. 285,700 (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SCOTT, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Door-Latch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of latches that are more especially intended for use on sliding doors; and the same consists of certain novel features in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 shows the latch in the door, the cap-plate being removed, showing the interior of the latch. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section in the plane 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the inner side of the escutcheon-plate and movable bottom plate, and Fig. 4 the outer side of the same.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of a door; B, the lock-case set into the same, and C C the escutcheon-plates set in flush with the surface of the door.
The mechanism inside of the lock-case consists of the angular latch-bolt D, pivoted at a, the post a serving as a stop and rest for the horizontal part of the latch-bolt when the same is at its lowest or looking position, and the spring (t which automatically returns the latch-bolt to a normal or looking position.
The upper end of the latch-bolt is provided with the elongated slot M, for the reception of the pin or pins 1) l), rigidly secured to and projecting inwardly from the inner side of the movable pivot-plates Z (Z, which form a bottom for the recess (1 in the escutcheonplates. One end of the bottom plates is pivoted to the escutcheonsatd the opposite end being provided with the shoulder (2*, adapted to have contact with the stop-pin d", rigidly secured to the escutcheon-plates,whereby this end of the plates (1 (Z is adapted to have alateral movement.
The shoulder and stop limit the travel of the plate or plates (Z (Z in one direction, as shown in Fig. 3, which is their normal position and corresponds to that of the latch-bolt when in a locked position. The opposite movement of the plates (Z (l are gaged by the diagonal finger are rigidly secured to the outer or face side of the bottom plates, d (l, in the recess of the escutcheon, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:- By this means the throw of the bottom plates is confined to a fixed limit, and they cannot be moved far enough in either direction to show an opening through the latch-case. The spring a serves to return the bottom plates, at d, to their normal position at the same time with that of the latch-bolt. By this arrangement the recess in the escutcheon-plates may always be of the same depthfno matter as to the thickness of the door, as the latch-bolt may be reached by lengthening out the pins 1) on the plates (Z.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the escutcheon and immediate parts are in duplicate, so that the latch may be operated from either side of the door, all the parts being flush with the surface, leaving no projections in the way to prevent the door from sliding clear into thejamb.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-latch, the combinatiomwith the recessed escutcheon-plates provided with the stop-pin d, of the bottom plate or plates pivoted at one end to said escutcheon-plates, the opposite end being provided with the shoul-' der (Z adapted to have contact with said stoppiu, and the finger bar or bars (1 rigidly secured to the outer side of said bottom plates, whereby the movement of the same is confined to a fixed limit, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a door-latch, the combination, with the recessed escutcheon-plates, of the movable bottom plates pivoted thereto, the pin or pins 5 JOHN R. SCOTT.
