A. FORESTER.
APPARATUS FOR- MEOHANIGALLY PLAYING 0N DRUMS. No. 898,551. Patented Nov. 2'7, 1888.
a A A 5 km A UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
ALBIN FOERSTER,-OF RONNEBURG, SAXONY, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR MECHANICALLY PLAYlNG ON DRUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 393,551, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed Mayfil, 1888. Serial No. 274.745.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBIN FoERsTER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Ronneburg, in the Province of Altenburg, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Mechanically Performing on Drums, Cymbals, and other Musical Instruments Simultaneously, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of me ehanical appliances by means of which a single performer is enabled to beat a drum and play on other instruments simultaneously; and the nature of the invention consists in the details of construction and combination, substantially as illustrated in the drawings, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my invention with a drum and cymbals attached. Fig. 2 is another view of the same with a triangle attached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
The drum rests upon a base,(desigua;ed by F.) To this base,by means of a bolt or in any other convenient way, is attached the pedestal E. An upright tube, G,stands in this pedestal. In this tube G the staff S is adjustably secured by means of a set-screw or in any other convenient way. Upon the boss of the pedestal F is mounted the treadle P, which is pivotally attached,so that it can be oscillated by the foot of the performer. A connectingrod, D, attaches this treadle to one end of a short lever (designated by A) at \V. To the other end of this lever A is rigidly attached the lower end of the drumstiek K, and by a pivotal connection to one end of the tilting lever H. This pivotal connection is designated by O. The lever H is pivoted upon the upper part of the tube G, and its other end extending beyond the said tube is pivoted to the lower end of the connecting-rod Z, the upper end of which rod is attached to the spring B. This spring Bis attached by one end to the staff S, and on the other end carries the cymbal X. Upon the top of the staff S is also a hook, E, upon which may be hung the triangle Y. O and (J designate clamps, which are attached, respectively, to the pedestal E andthe staff S and grasp the rim R of the drum T. This drum, resting upon the sup- (Xo model.)
port L, is held in proper position by the said clamps.
Upon the top of the drum T is fastened the lower cymbal, X, directly under the upper cymbal, X.
The staff S may be adjusted by slipping it up or down in the tube G, in which it may be detaehably fastened to suit drums of different diameters. For this purpose the rod Z is also made adjustable at M; the whole device to be as illustrated in the drawings.
lVhen the various parts of the device have been adjusted and arranged as illustrated, the performer places his foot upon the treadle P, as illustrated, and pushes it downward. This, by the operation of the various parts of the mechanism just described, causes the drumv stick K to strike the head of the drum T and the cymbal X to strike upon the cymbal X. As soon as the pressure of the foot is removed the spring B carries the various parts back to their original position. And thus by proper motion the performer can beat the time of a melody on drum and cymbals with his foot simultaneously, while his hands are free to play the triangle or any other desired instrument.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the base F, the pedestal E, attached thereto, the upright tube G, secnredin said pedestal, and the staff S, detachably adjustable in said tube G, of the treadle P, pivoted upon said pedestal, the bar D, connecting the treadle P and the short le ver A, the short lever A,connecting the drum 1 stick K and the lever H with the bar D, the
drum-stick K,pivoted to said lever H,the lever H, pivoted upon said tube G, the bar Z, adjustable as to its length at M and connecting the lever H and the spring B, the spring B, mounted on the staff S and connected as specified, the hook E, mounted upon said staff S,the clamps G G,attached to the staff S and the pedestal F, respectively, and the support L, all constructed and arranged for use substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ALBIN FOERSTER.

OTTO WOLFE, lnUL DRUCKMULLER.
