FASTENING BAND FOR MEMORANDUM BOOKS.
No. 393,198. Patented Nov. 20, 1888 WITNESSES wfw 4% 44W BY ATTORNEYS.
YNITED STATES PATENT Orrrca.
SAMUEL J. YOUNG, or BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO KIGGINS & TOOKER 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING-BAND FOR MEMORANDUM-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,198, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed April 30, 1887. Serial No. 236,658.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. YOUNG, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening-Band for Memorandum-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fastening for books-such as memorandum-bookswhich fastening gives a neat appearance to the book, and is durable and reliable, holding the book securely closed.
The invention consists of a memorandumbook provided on the inside of one cover with a cross-piece or pocket for the reception of the leaves and the other cover.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improve ment in an Open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the book in a closed position; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of a modified form of my improvement.
Heretofore bookssuch as memorandumbooks, &c.-were locked in a closed position by elasps or elastic bands secured to one cover and passed over the other cover after the book had been closed; but the clasps were easily broken and liable to tear-the pockets in which the books were carried, and the elastic bands were soon worn out, losing their elasticity, and were also liable to be torn off. With my improved fastening, presently to be described, I avoid these difficulties and provide a reliable fastening, which gives a neat appearance to the book.
(No model.)
The book A is provided with the covers 13 and 0, between which are held, in any suitable manner, the leaves D. Near the outer end of the cover B, and on the inside of the same, is formed a U-shaped cross-piece, E, which may be closed at its outer end to form a pocket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be open, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The cross-piece E extends from one side of the cover to the other, and is of sufiioient width and height to admit the outer ends of the leaves D and the cover 0, which, when passed under the cross-piece E, as shown in Fig. 2, are locked to the cover B, whereby the book is securely held in a closed position.
The cross-piece E can'be made of leather, card-board, sheet metal, or other suitable material. A separate pocket or loop may be formed on the outside of the cross-piece E or on the edges or backs of the covers B and G for the reception and retention of the pencil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a memorandum-book provided with a non-elastic pocket or band at or near the outer end of one of its covers and situated on the inside thereof, the said pocket or band being of sufficient height and width to admit the outer end of the leaves and the other cover, as set forth.
