Description

(No Model.)
, A. N. BARNES.
OUTRIGGER.
Patents .No. 392,901. 'Nov. 13, 1888 H Y a BHIL- NITEED STATES ALBERT N. BARNES, OF GOUVERNEUR, NEW YORK.
OUTRIGGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,901, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed May 10, 1888. Serial No. 273,480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gouverneur, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Outriggers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Outriggers for rowboats, shifts, and similar vessels, and the purpose thereof is to provide an adjustable and detachable outrigger which may be attached to'th'e gunwale of a boat at any point, and adjusted thereupon to any desired degree, said outrigger being also adapted for use upon gunwalesof different width or thickness.
It is my purpose, also, to so construct and combine the parts of such an outrigger that the latter may be turned inboard at will, and
- features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and then definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the outrigger in place. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the construction and arrangement of the several parts.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 denotes the gunwale of a boat having any ordinary construction. Upon this gunwale I mount my improved outrigger, consisting of the jaw-plate 2, having two parallel rigid jaws, 3, separated by an interval somewhat more than sufficient to admit a gunwale of any usual thickness or width. Upon thejawplate 2 is mounted an inner movable clampplate, 4, having clips 5 embracing the edges of the jaw-plate, and through the inner jaw, 3, is tapped a clamping-screw, 6, the end of which is preferably swiveled in the clampplate 4.
Upon the jaw-plate is hinged the outrigger 7, having the usual pintle, 8, though a rowlock may be used instead. From the hingejoint throughout part of its length the outrigger is provided with a slot, 9, within which lies a rib, 10, rigidly formed upon the jawplate. The upwardly-curved end of this rib lies somewhat above the surface of the out rigger, and has a detent or tooth, 12, which engages a disk, 13, piv'otally mounted on the outrigger and provided with a lug, 14, by which it may be rotated upon its pivot-15. By simply throwing the edge of this disk from under the tooth 12 of the rib 10 the outrigger may be turned entirely inboard, the rib passing through the slot 9 as the outrigger is raised. When extended, however, the disk is dropped under the end of the rib, and thereby locks the outrigger firmly in extended position.
This outrigger can be instantly applied to any form of boat and adjusted to any point upon the gunwale. It is readily detachable by simply releasing the clamping-screw, and can be turned inboard in an instant, as already described.
What I claim is- 1. An outrigger for boats having a jawplate provided with two rigid jaws, a clampplate movable between said jaws, a clamping-screw tapped through one of said jaws and acting upon said clampplate, and an outrigger hinged to the jaw-plate, substantially as described.
2. In an outrigger for boats, the combina tion, with ajaw-plate having two rigid jaws, of a movable clamp-plate, a clamping-screw tapped through one of said jaws and acting upon the clamp-plate, an outrigger hinged to the jaw-plate and having a central slot, a rib rigid upon said jaw-plate and lying in the slot in the outrigger, and a disk 'pivotally mounted on the latter and engaging the end of said rib, substantially as described.
3. In an outrigger, the combination, with an adjustable jaw-plate embracing the gunwale, of an outrigger hinged to said jaw-plate and having a central slot, a rib rigid. on said jaw-plate and lying in the said slot, and a ALBERT N. BARNES.
