GLOVE SEWING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,181, dated November 6, 1888. Application filed April 30, 1885-. Serial No. 163,989. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE M. BOLAND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new Improvements in Glove-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a clear and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.-
This invention relates to that class of sewing-machines in which the fabric is fed to the needle in the formation of the stitches by means of a feed-disk capable of an intermittently-rotary movement, one example of said class of machines being. shown in my Letters Patentdated April 23, A. D. 1878, No. 202,695, reissued February 22, A. D. 1881, No. 9,586.
My present invention comprises certain novel combinations of parts wherebya more precise and certain movement is given to the feed-disk, whereby lost motion in said disk is prevented, and whereby the machine may be run in either direction without at all changing or affecting the operations of said feed-disk.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view illustrating the construction of my said invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken in the line x x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of one portion of the apparatus, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the cam B.
The frame of the machine, the needle and its operating mechanism, and various other adjuncts may be of the usual or any suitable construction-such, for instance, as shown in my said patent,No. 202,695-and therefore call for no specific description herein.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the drivingshaft of the machine, which may be rotated by a suitable belt on its pulley a, or otherwise. On the shaft A, as shown in the drawings, may be the eccentric b, which, as represented in my Letters Patent aforesaid, gives motion to various parts of the stitchforming mechanism.

O is the fabric feed-disk, supported on a suitable arbor or shaft, 0. The arbor c is supported and works in a suitable bearing, d, in
a bracket, D, extended from the frame or cas ing E of the machine. Adjacent to and in the same plane with the feed-disk G is or may be the second disk, F, of similar character to and supported in due relation with the feed-disk O in any usual or appropriate manner-for example, as shown in my Letters Patent heretofore referred to.
On the under side of the feed-disk O, and preferably integral therewith, is a circular disk, G, of less diameter than the flangef of the feed-disk. Upon and around this circular disk G is placed a ring or collar, H, which forms part of a lever, I, hereinafter more fully described.
Below the feed-disk O is a ratchet-disk, K, the teeth of which are preferably fine and narrow, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The ratchetdisk K may be secured to the disk G and feeddisk 0 by screws b, (see Fig. 3,) or connected thereto in any other suitable manner.
The disk K may be broad enough to project beyond the periphery of the disk G, (see Fig. 1,) in order to retain the collar H in place upon the disk G; but said collar may be supported in any other suitable manner.
In the side of the frame or casing E is an opening, 0, to the outer side of which casing near said opening is secured a bracket, L, in which is a nut, 0. Through the nut 6 works a screw, 9, which may be turned by a milled head, 9, at its outer end, or otherwise.
M is a forked block that projects from the bracket L into the central opening, 0', in the side of the case E. Into the space within the fork M projects the inner end of the screw 9.
Upon the inner end of the lever I is an antifriction roller, m, preferably conical or ta- .pering, which roller rests upon the cam B, the
lever I itself being passed through the space r v of the forked block M. (See Fig. 1.) The forked block M serves as a guide for the inner end of the lever I to retain said inner end of the lever in due relation to the cam B. The
inner end of the lever I is held against the pressed in proper contact with the ratchetwheel K by springs of any appropriate kind,
but preferably by spiral springs s" u,as shown 1 in Fig. The spring 8" presses simultaneously upon the inner part of pawl s and upon l the outer part of pawl 11, while the spring a presses in like manner upon pawls a and w.
Pivotcd in the side of the bracket 1), which I carries the feed-disk C, are stop-pawls r and 1 1 which may be pressed in contact with the 1 ratchet-disk K by a spring, 1), arranged to press simultaneously upon the inner end of pawl 12 and the outer arm of pawl 3 as shown in Fig. 2. The various pawls aforesaid are of course fulcrumed in their places by suitable pivots.
By means of a group of pawls, as distin' gnished from a single pawl, upon the lever I and in conjunction with the ratehetdisk K of the feed-disk C said ratchet-disk may have teeth so line that there will be no appreciable or practically detrimental lost motion in the action of the lover I in giving the requisite intermittent feeding movement to the feed-disk C. The working capacity of the machine is by this means very considerably increased, the machine runs more smoothly, and the noise of the feed is much diminished. By-moving inward the screw 9' the inner end of the lover I may be prevented from contact with thelower '1 portions of the inclines a I) of the cam B, and j the movement of the lever, and consequently that ol' the feed-disk (l, and therefore the length of the stitch, may be regulated at pleasure. Inasmuch as the two slopes or inclines a b of the cam 13 are alike, it follows that the said cam will actuate the lover I in exactly the same manner whether the driving-shaft A be run in one direction or the other.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination of the feed-disk C and ratchet-disk K with the lever I, pawls s u on said lever, spring .9 between said pawls,which spring holds both pawls to the disk K, cam 13, screw 5 and a guide for adjusting and guiding the lever I, substantially as and for the purpose heroin set forth.
2. The combination of the feeddisk C and 1 its ratchct'disk K with the disk G, connected to the disk C, lever I, constructed with a ring I or collar, H, that is contiguous to the ratchet 2 disk K, pawls s a on said lever, spring 8 be- I tween said pawls, which spring holds both pawls to the ratchet-disk K, guide M for the lover I, spring S, and cam B for the lever I, t substantiall y as and for the purpose herein set i forth.
I The combination, with the feed-disk O and its ratchet-disk K, of the lever I, pawls su l on said lever, spring sbetween said pawls, said spring pressing 011 the inner partof one pawl and on the outer part of the other pawl, and with a separate stop-pawl, 1 and cam B, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
4. The combination of the feed-disk O and its ratchet-disk K with the lever I, pawls s a on said lever for operating said ratchet-disk, spring s between said pawls, said. spring pressing on the inner part of one pawl and on the outer part of the other pawl, and with the g cam B, having the two inclines a 1/, arranged as described, to actuate the lever in whatever direction the cam is turned, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
5.
