IMPROVEMENT IN FU RNACES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,168, dated July '7, 1863.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD PALAZOT, of Bordeaux, in the Empire of France, engineer, have invented a new7 and useful Improvement in Smoke-Consuming Furnaces; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hal to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters marked thereon.

My invention consistsv in an improved arrangement of certain parts of steam-boiler and other furnaces, by means of which perfect combustion and complete furnivority are obtained, accompanied in many cases by a considerable economy of fuel.

The annexed drawings represent in cross and longitudinalsection a boilerfurnace comprisin g the present-improvements.

A is a slit aperture formed across the furnace in front of the grate and giving passage to a current of air, the volume and velocity of which are regulated by the register B.

C is a vaulting of refractory clay, which in certain cases may be replaced by a simple plate. The form of this vault or platernay be modified,

so long as its ptsition above the re bridge be retained, as seen in the drawing, so as to concentrate the heat at the passage 0f the flame in D D. rlhe section of this passage D D should be about one-fifth or one-sixth of the surface of the grate.

On opening the register B of the furnace, arranged as above, the atmospheric air is admitted, and, flowing over the incandescent A BERNARD PALAZOT.
