UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM JOSEPH DEVERS, OF SORANTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO MARTIN CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,357, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed May 12, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM JosEPH DE- vERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scrauton,in the county of Lackawanna and 5 State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin a Combined Sash- Lock and feather-Strip, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in a [0 combined sash-lock and Weatherstrip; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter first fully described and then specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a front view of a window showing the improved lock and weather-strip applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the lock and the check rails of the sashes, to show the Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the window with the parts thereof detached.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate the check-rails respectively of the lower and upper sashes, and they are provided in their contiguous sides with the longitudinal registering-grooves a and b. A transverse horizontal opening, 0, is formed in the center of the check-rail A, and a registering-socket,
D, is formed in the inner side of the check rail B. A stem or bolt, E, is mounted in the opening 0, and is adapted to engage in the socket D, and the outer end of the said stem or bolt is beveled, so that when it is drawn out its inner end is flush with the beveled inner side of the check-rail A, as will be readily understood on reference to the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The stem or bolt is further provided with a transverse slot, F, in which is mounted the thin metallic weather-strip G, which fits (when the stem or bolt is drawn in) in the groove a in the check-rail, and engages (when the said stem or bolt is pushed out) in the registering-groove b in the rail B.
This strip may be of any desired rigid material; but metal is considered the best for the purpose, for the reason that a very thin strip is of sufficient strength to stand the strain. The inner end of the stem or bolt isthreaded,
and the knob or handle H is mounted thereon and is provided near its outer end with the annular groove I. The plate K is formed in two sections, 7; k, having the bearing L between them, and the edges of the said bearing are engaged in the groove I, whereby although the knob or handle is capable of free rotary movement it cannot be removed from the check-rail and cannot be moved longitudinally. The stem or bolt is provided with a head, M, which operates in arecess, N, in the so outer end of the knob or handle.
The operation of the invention is as follows: To look the sashes, rotate the knob or handle so as to force the stem or bolt outward, thereby causing its outer end to engage in the socket D, and also causing the outer edge of the strip to engage in the groove b in the checkrail. The strip may be forced into the said groove with any desired degree of force to prevent rattling of the sash and effectually 7o exclude the wind and cold. To remove the lock, turn the knob or handle in the opposite direction, thereby drawing the strip and the stem or bolt out of engagement with the groove and socket in the sash-rail and concealing them in the rail of the lower sash.
Having thus described the invention, I claim As an improvement in sash-locks, the combination, with the check-rail A, having the recess O in ils inner side, and the check-rail B, provided with a socket D, of the hollow handle having a socket, N, and an external annular groove, I, the securing-plate made in sections K K, having their meeting edges provided with bearings L and engaging in the groove 1, the bolt inserted through the handle and operated by the same, and having a head,
M, on its inner end playing in the socket N, and its outer end engaging the socket D, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my ownIhave hereto afiixed mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM JOSEPH DEVERS.
