SLATE ERASER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,541, dated October 2, 1888.

Application filed June 16, 1888. Serial No. 277,342. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB WILKENING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Erasers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in slate-erasers; and it consists of a flexible reservoir attached to a circular base, and connected therewith is a flexible band or springclasps to hold a moistened and dry sponge.

The object of my invention is to supply the erasing-sponge from a flexible reservoir which will yield the water necessary for the sponge on making slight pressure.

The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse central section of the eraser. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same at a right angle to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the spring-clasp. Fig. 4 is a transverse central section of the flexible reservoir with a broken part of a modification of the base.

Like letters designate like parts throughout the several views.

B is a circular wooden base with a central pin, 2 to engage an orifice in the bottom of the flexible reservoir, a circular concavity to catch any moisture escaping from the erasingsponge, the recessed bottom it, and the holes 8 s for the reception of an elastic band. The pin of the base may have the form as shown at c, Fig. 4, thus passing entirely through the wall of the bulb or reservoir, the said pin closing the orifice and making a firm attachment to the reservoir. The base may be constructed of metallic plate and preserve the form in outline, substantially as shown.

The flexible reservoir A is made of india-rubher, and its general form is spherical, having a concavity on its upper surface with a central orifice, and an orifice in the bottom that embraces the pin a of the base. The latter is a closed orifice, (shown at Fig. 1,) and the orifice 1) (shown at Fig. 4) opens into the interior of the reservoir.

D is an elastic band used to bind two sponges on opposite sides of the reservoir. This band is shown at Fig. 2, and by dotted line at D, Fig. 1.

O O are small pieces of sponge. One is moistened to erase pencil marks on a slate, and the other is used to dry the same. These are held to the sides of the reservoir, where they are conveniently situated for use, by the elastic hand. These sponges may be likewise supported by the spring-wire claspsF,the ends of which are driven into the base.

In use the operation is thus described: Invert the eraser and compress the bulbina vessel of water; on releasing the same it fills with water. Take one of the sponges, put it into the concavity at the top and make gentle pressure, and water will be taken up by the sponge, when it is ready for use on the slate. Usethe other sponge to dry the slate, and when the two are not in use they are held to the eraser, as before described. The elastic band is en tered into the orifices of the base by sawed notches, as shown at Fig. 2, and when this band is used the clasps are dispensed with, and vice versa.

1. A slateeraser comprising base B, with pin a, and a circular concavity on its upper surface, orifices s s, for the elastic band D,and the flexible reservoir A, attached to said base by an orifice, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the base B and flexible reservoir A, the elastic band D, to hold sponges in connection with said parts, substantially as described.
