SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,849, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed July 3, 1883- To (oZZ whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that we, JOHN F. DIEMER, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and PAUL E. GONON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to knockdown paper boxes especially adapted for filing or storing papers, bills, document-s, &c.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved paper box which is very simple and durable in construction and easily put together when in a knockdown position.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the im p rovement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 00 cc of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. l is a sectional plan view of the improvement on the line .2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional end elevation of part of the improvement on the line w 20, Fig. 4E.
The improved paper box is provided with a box-body made of four independent sides, B, C, D, and E, of which the two opposite sides B and O are each provided at each side edge with a metallic strip, F, secured by rivets or other means to the respective sides B and C. The outer end of each metallic strip F is bent into an outwardly-extending hook F, adapted to engage a similarly shaped inwardlybent hook G, formed at right angles on the metallic strip G, secured to the edge of each side D and E of the paper-box body.
In order to fit the four sides B, C, D,'and E together, it is necessary to slide the two opposite sides B and O, with their hooks F, over the hooks G of the other sides, D and E.

Serial No. 278,951. (Model) extending inward and at right angle to the said metallic strip and its respective side, D or E. This hook H 011 each side I) and E can be engaged by a hook, I, formed on the two opposite ends of the metallic bottom I, which corresponds in size to the end opening formed by the four sides of the paper-box body. The outer surface of the metallic bottom plate I is preferably covered by a corresponding sheet, J, of paper, secured by rivets or other suitable means to the said metallic bottom I. A ring, K, is fastened in the usual manner to the two plates I and J forming the bottom. On the outer ends of the two sides B and C are secured the angular metallic strips L, of which the part L extends inward at right angles to the respective side B or C, and the said part L is adapted to rest against the outside of the sheet J of the paper-box bottom, as is plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the several sides forming the paper box are in a knockdown condition and the operator desires to set up the box, he first takes the two sides D and E and inserts from above or below the bottom plates, I and J, so that thehooks I engage the hooks H of the metallic strips l-I, secured to the said sides I) and E. The operator next takes hold of one of the sides B or O, and moves the outer edge of the said side over one end of the bottom plate I, so that the hooks F of the metallic strips F engage the corresponding hooks, G, of the metallic strips G, secured to the sides D and E. The operator slides the long side B or C inward until the flange L of the angular strip L rests against the outside of the paper covering J, secured to the metallic bottom plate I. The other side, 0 or B, is then inserted likewise, whereby the box is completely set up. Now, it will be seen that when the operator takes hold of the ring K and exerts a pull on the bottom plates, I and J, he carries along the entire box as the said bottom plates, I and J, are securely held to the box-bodyby the hooks I, engaging the corresponding hooks, H, of 5 the metallic strips 11, secured to the sides D and E, andas the said bottom plates, Iand J, abut against the flanges L of the angular strips L, secured to'the sides B and 0, thus itwill be seen that the several pieces forming 10o the entire paper box are securely held in place. When the operator desires to take the boxapart, he first removes the sides 3 and C, by sliding them rearwardly over the bottom plates, I and J, and then remoyes the bottom plates, '1 and J, by sliding them up or down, so as to disengage the remaining sides D and E.
It will be seen that the paperboxbody,when set up, is provided on each corner on the outside with an angular metallic strip, whereby the paper-box body becomes very strong.

As an improved article of manufacture, a knockdown paper box consisting in the sides E D, having angular metallic strips G riveted to it along its longitudinal edges and angular metallic strips 11 along its vertical edges or ends, the inwardly-extending flanges formed thereby being bent upon themselves, as at G H, the front section, I J having inwardly-projecting flanges or folded edges interlocking with the parts H of the sides, and the top and bottom B 0, having metallic strips riveted thereto along the longitudinal edges F, bent back upon themselves and interlocking with the parts G, and having angle-strips L riveted to their front ends and overlapping the upper and lower edges of the front I J, substantially as set forth.
