UNTTnn STATES PATENT @Trrea TlIlOMrrS )IANAITAN, OF NE\Y YORK, N. Y.
APPARATUS FOR COATING PAPER AND OTHER'MATERIAL.
SFECZFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,544, dated March 12,1889.
Application filed September 13, 1888. Serial No. 285,324. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in ilpplltll'llS for Coating Paper and other Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide novel, simple, and e tiicient mechanism for uniformly and properly supplying a fluidsuch as oil, aspl'ialtum, or other substance-to the under surface of a web of paper, parchment, or like material trz'tveling over the uppermost portion of a roller that delivers theoil or other substance to the web.
The object of my invention 1 accomplish by the features of construction and combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and specified in the claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating m v invention, in which Figure 11. is a plan view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section along the line 1' on, Fig. 1.
Sim ilar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a frame or support. ()n. a roller, 13, is wound a web or sheet, (i, of paper or other material. From this web-carrying roller lithe web or sheet passes to a tension-roller, l), and to a delivery-roller, S, supplied with a suitable substanee-such as oil or asphaltum from a trough, F. From the delivery-roller E the w(b or sheet passes to a tension-roller, G, and to the scrapers l l. The distributing-roller I causes the substance to be distributed evenly or uniformly over the sheet 0. The treated sheet is wound up on the receiving-roller K.
The scrapers l. M remove the surplus substance from the delivery-roller E and the scrapers ll remove the surplus substance from the sheet. The drip-board (3 leads the surplus substances removed by the scrapers ll back into the trough F. The roller E has a covering, N, of absorbent material'such as t'elt and the scrapers ll have their scrapingedges provided with a soft covering, 0, such as felt. The scrapers ll are thus not likely to cut or injure the sheet C, which, when moist or saturated with the substance from the trough F, is trail and easily injured. The
distributing-roller I has a covering, P, of absorbent material, such as felt.
The scrapers 1! are adjustable vertically independently ol' each other alon ways formed by arms R, and said scrapers can be adjusted along said ways to different heights or levels by being made to rest on pins S, inserted in holes in the arms ll. By having each scraper ll adjustable along its way independently of the other scrapers the scraping operation, can be accurately regulated. To provide tension of the sheet 0, a brake-band, T, is provided known suitable way to stop or start the receiving-rcller.
The trough F hangs upon the cords or straps X, one of which passes over the guide-roller Y to the rotary shaft Z, where said strap is secured, while the other strap is secured directly to the rotary shat't Z. By turning the rotary shaft Z in one direction or another the trough F can be raised or lowered, so as to be broughtinto proper position relative to the roller E. A handle or haml-whcel, u, can be used to actuate the rotary shaft Z, and a ratchet, l), and pawl 13 can be applied to hold the rotary shat't Z stationary.
The trough F can be emptied through the stop-cock 0 into the trough d, whence the substance can be drawn off into any desired receptacle through the stop-cockf.
\Vhat I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a trough, F, and a delivery-roller, E, rotating therein, and over which the web passes, of a tension-roller, G, above the trough, and under which the web passes, a web-recei vin roller, l ,'and the soft.- ened scrapers ll, adjustable in a vertical plane to dillfercnt heights between the tension and web-receiving rollers and constituting a support for the web, over and against which the latter travels, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a trough, F, a delivery-roller, E, and rollers for feeding a web over the delivery-roller, of arms R, arranged to form guideways, a series of scrapers, H, adjustable vertically independent of each other in said guideways, and pins S, for supporting the scrapers at different heights, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a delivery-rol1er, E, and rollers for feeding a web over the same, of the trough F, the straps X, suspending the trough, the strap-supporting guide-roller Y, and the rotary shaft Z, connected with the straps for winding and unwinding the same to raise and lower the trough, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a webcarrying roller, 13, a trough, F, a delivery-roller, E, over which the web travels, a web-receiving roller, K, and tension-rollers, of a brake-band, T,
passing around a part of the web-carrying roller, and a lengthwise-adjustable screw, V, connected with one end of the brake-band, and having a handle, XV, for rotating it, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a trough, F, a delivery-roller, E, over which the web passes, and a web-receiving roller, K, of softened scrapers H, located between the delivery and Web-receiving rollers, and constituting a sup porting-rest over which the web passes, and a distributing-roller, I, having an absorbent covering, P, and rotating in bearings between the guides and web-receiving roller, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two sub- 40 WV. 0. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
