ED\VIN \VYCKOFF, OF CAMDEN, NE\Y JERSEY.
MARKER, FURROWER, AND COVERER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,309, dated March 12, 1889,
Application filed September 7, 1888. gerial 110284.797. (N0 model.)
To (LZZ whom it 71mg, concern.-
Be it known that I, ED\\'IN \V'vcKoFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of tamden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Markers, Furrowers, and Coverers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in marlv'ers, furrowers, and coverers; and it consists of a device of simple, durable, and inexpensive cmistruetion, comprising means for marking, furrowing, and covering in an ellieient manner and clamping the parts.
Figure 1 represents atop plan view of a combined marker, furrower, and eoverer embodying"my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation thereof, with the wheels adjusted to form a coverer. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section, the wheels being adjusted to form a furrower.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several. figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of the device, on the axles of which. are the supptnting-wheels l3; and C designates the draftpole or thills thereof.
1) designates abow or staple secured to the frame, and one end of the rod or bar I, carrying the marker 1?, has an opening through which one limb of the bow or staple is passed, the staple being parallel, as shown, with the front of the frame.
The marker l1 secured to the rod E by means of a plate, F, and yokes F the latter embracing the marker, which is one side of the bar E, and having their ends passing through the plate F on the other side of the bar, nuts working on the threads of the yokes clamping or binding the parts together. From this construction it is evident that the marker can be placed on either side of the machine, or can be thrmvn back out of the way, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and when the marker is in use the rod carrying it is adapted to fit between the uprights or lugs G on the frame, which retains said marker in place.
ll designates a slotted bar secured to the frame, and in said slotted bar is placed the serew-threaded shanks .I, having studs K,
which form axles for the furrowing and covering wheels L. Nuts .I engage the screwthreaded shanks for rctz'tining them and the furrower and eovcrer in the properadjusted position. From this construction it is evident that the furrmvers and coverers are laterally adjustable, and also :uljustable at angles to each other to provide coverers.
In order that the shanks may be retained in the position to which they are adjusted in the slotted bar, a rod, M, passes through the frame and slotted bars, and is threaded to receive cl amping-nuts N, which bear against the slotted bar on each side and serve to keep the slot in said bar from expandingand also take up the wear on said bar.
lhe operation is as follows: \Vhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the marker rests upon the ground, forming a guide, and the wheels I) are arranged in a vertical line, forming furrows as the machine moves over the ground, and when desired to use the device as a coverer the wheels are brought togeiher and adjusted at angles to each other, whereby they provide a coverer, as clearly shown in Fig. 23.
\(hen the device is out of use, the furrowing and covering wheels are elevated above the ground and. the marker is thrown back out of the way.
In order to prevent the strips of the slotted bar from coming together or being broken, a block, 0, is interposed in the slot, and an open in g is made through said block to allow the passage of the rod M for securingthebloek in place.
It is thus evident that I provide a device which combines effectively a marker, furrower, and covcrer, each serving its purpose in a thorough and perfect manner.
IIavin g thus described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a marker, :l'urrower, and coverer, a frame having lugs or uprights, a marker pivoted to the frame and retained in place by said uprights, a slotted cross-bar in the frame, threaded shanks carrying wheels or rollers adjustable vertically and angularly in said slotted bar, and a clamping rod passing through said frame and slotted bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a marker, furrower, and eoverer, a 3. In a marker, f urrower, and coverer, a ,frame, a slotted bar arranged transversely in frame, a transverse slotted bar carried there- 15 the frame, threaded shanks in said slotted bar, by, shanks carrying Wheels adj nstable Vertistuds on the shanks forming axles for the coveally and angularly in said slotted bar, nuts 5 ering and furrowing Wheels, clamping-nuts on on said shanks for retaining the same in the the threaded shanks for binding against the adjusted positions, and a rod passing through slotted bar for retaining said shanks in their the frame, and slotted bars having clamping- 20 adjusted positions, a block arranged in the nuts thereon, all arranged and adapted to serve slotted bar, a rod passing through the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10 bar, and block, and nuts on said rod for bind- EDXVIN \VYCKOFF.
ing against the slotted bar, all arranged and W'itnesses: adapted to serve substantially as and for the JOHN A. IEDERSHEIM,
purpose described. J AMES F. KELLY
