SCHOOL-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,272, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed August 22, 1388. Serial No. 283,430. (No model) To all 1171072]. i2! 7771(1/(3071110/71:
the desk lid or top A. The arm E, having Be it known that l, WILLIS LIPHNCOT'I, a an enlarged head, (9, is pivoted to the mow citizen of the United States, residing at Smith entre, in the cminty of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in School-Desks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to impriwements in I school-desks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a desk top or lid having a bookrest capable of being adjusted at any desired angle to support books, and which will when closed present a. level surface tlush with the surface of the desk.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangen'ient ot' the parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out/in the f claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view oi a shool-desk provided with a desk top or lid constructed in aceori'lance with this invention, and illustratii'ig the position of the parts when-the hook-rest is raised.
Fig. is a detail end view of the top of the desk, illustrating the position of the parts when the book-rest is not in use.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the desk top or lid, which is secured to the other portimis of a desk, of any desirable construc tion. The desk top or lid has its front portion, (1, reduced in thickness to receive a supporting-slab, .3, which, when l ving flat upon the reduced portion a, is flush with the top 1 of the upper i'ace ot the lid or top A.
The ends of the snpporting-slab .l are bound by metallie stri ')s which re-enl'orce the support lug-slab, prevent it warping, and
ada' iited to have pivoted to it a movtitliile bar,
D, which is also pivoted to the desk lid or top A, whereby the supportingslab may he raised to the position illustrated in Fig. l. oi the drawings to provide a book-rest. The supportingslab 13 is maintained in this elevated position and rendered capable of adjustinent to any desired inclination by arm E, which engages rack f, formed in side able bar D, intermediate of the ends thereof, and the portion of the movable bar forward ot' the pivotal. pointof the arm E is cut away to permitsaid arm to lie in between the movable bar and the side piece, F, and. be pivotally flush with the edge of the desk.
The side piece, F, one of which is secured to each side of the desk, is constructed of suitable metal, and is cut away intermediate 0t. its ends to form a reccss, 7", to receive the movable bar I) and the arm E.
The rackf is formed bya series'ot. notches made in the side piece, F, at the front end of the recess f, and when the supportingslab B is raised to form a book-rest the arm E engages the rack f and holds the supporting-slab in the desired position.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that desk tops and lids constructed in accordance with this invention are neat, compact, l and possess great durability and strength, are ca mhleot affordingahook-rest that may be adjusted to any desired angle, and present an even surface when the book-rest is closed and not in. use.
Having deseribs'al the invention, what 1 claim is 1. The combination of the desk top or lid having its front portion reduced in thickness, and provided with recessed side strips having racks, the su morting-slab sliding between said strips, the movable bars pivotz'illveonnectcd to the top or lid, and the arms secured to the movable bars and adapted to engage the saidracks, said bars and arms adapted to fold in the recessed portions of said stripsand to align with the tops thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The etnnbination ol' the desk top or lid having the reduced portion, and provided with the recessed side strips having the racks, the supporting-slab having the re-enforced strips and sliding between said side strips, the movable bars pivot-ally connected pieces, F, suitably secured to the sides of! to the top or lid and the supportingslab,
and the arms secured to the movable bars In testimony that I claim the foregoing as and engaging the said racks to hold the supmy own I have hereto aflixed my signature 1n p0rting-slab in an elevated position, said presence of two Witnesses.
bars and arms being adapted to fold in the \VILLIS LIPPTNCOT'I. 5 recessed portion of said side strips and to Vitnesses:
align Withthe tops thereof, substantially as MANFORD SAVAGE,
described. JOHN SAWYER.
