LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,189, dated March 5, 1889.
Application led May 29, 1888.
To LZZ whom, may concern,.-
Be it known that l, JOSEPH M. EDGAR, a y
citizen ot' the United States, residing at Argentine, in the count-y ot XVyandot-te and State ot Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and l hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement on IO the safety-lock for which Letters Patent of l the United States No. 352,085 were granted me on the 2d day of November, 1886; and it is designed to serve the same genera-l purpose as the device patented as aforesaid-namely, l
that of a'lock in the sense of a guard on freight` shown) on the base ot' the case, on which lugs car doors and the like, tending to prevent access to the contents ot the car by presenting i indication otl any tampering with the lock.
In the main the construction of the satety- 2O lock forming the subject of my presentapl plication is the saine as that shown in my i aforesaid patent, the difference consisting,
stead of the pivotal bolt and parts connected therewith) for actuatingthe registering mechl anism in unlocking the device; whereby it changes the combination of characters, and thus indicates the fact of tampering.
The object of my presentimprovement is to simplify the means for actuating the register` L ing mechanism and for locking it in its set position, thereby, also, to at'tord better means for the purpose, and, besides, to adapt the device to permit the use with it ot an ordinary 3 car-seal formed with a trangible metal strip or 1 with wire, thereby still .further to protect it against tampering'.
My invention consists in the general construction of my improved safety-lock; and'it.
40 further consists in details ot construction and combinations ot parts.
ln the drawings, Figure l shows my improved device in elevation as applied to the door of a freight-car to prevent access to the interior of the car without unlocking the pivhasp to be withdrawn from its locking position l to disclose the internal mechanism..
Serial No. 275,484 (Modell Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 ot Fig. il and viewed in the direction of the arrow, Fig. et, aI section taken on the line t l of Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction ot the arrows, and Fig. 5 a bottom plan view of the sliding-bolt device for locking and unlocking the pivotal boltand for actuating the registering mechanism in the unlocking operation to change the combination.
A is the case, having a cover, l', provided with openings r and with beveled lugs (not shown) on its under side.
B and B are rotatory disks on stationary shafts extending from inclined lugs (not the disks are supported, whereby they are inclined, as illustrated, and overlap each other. The disks are provided circumferentially on their upper surfaces with numerals, which may range from O to 9, and on their lower faces each with a circular flange, separated to i principally, in providing improved means (inl leave a lip, and spaces, one on each side of the lip, and directly behind the lip is a lug or projection in radial line with the numeral 9. The disk B is provided in its periphery with teeth q, corresponding in number with the number of numerals on its surface; and each disk' B is provided on its surface about the axis of its rotation with pins or 'projections q', corresponding in number with the number of numerals on tho disk, each pin being in radialline with a ditt'erent numeral.
At eat-h opening r a numeral coincident with it on a disk is displayed. A complete revolution ot the disk l, whereby each numeral upon it is in turn brought coincident with the respective opening r', turns the adjacent disk l to bring coincident with the icslwctiv'elyadjatient opening r a numeral next' to that previously displayed, and a coinplete revolution ot the said disk 3 turns the l adjacent disk in the same way, and so on to the end ot' the series ot' disks. '.ihus each time the disk l is actuated the combination ot' numerals on the series ot' disksl is changed: and it is the means, hereinatter describedfor actuating the disk l. and through it the other disks, as described,to which my improvement especially relates.
The parts thus tar described and their manner ot' operation are,by1 )i'efcreiice, iden-` lOO tically' the saine as set forth in' my' aforesaid. Letters Patent; hence it is not :necessary to show and describe them and set 'forth their opera-tion more explicitly in the present connection.
The cover r is flanged around its edge on the under side, as shown at p, Fig. l, to render it hollow, and toward its upper edge it is provided transversely with a slot, o. Adjacent to the slot 0 in the upper right-hand expanded corner (the location being designated with the cover in position, as shown ill Fig. l) is a rounded or cylindrical opening, yn, leading into a slot, nl, below it and lengthwise of the cover, and between the extremity of the said cover and the slot nl, and below the openi i gagement with the bolt D at ille recess c ing n, the flange p is recessed, as shown at l, Fig. 'l, asnlaller recess, 7i, being also provided in the flange p to the-left ot' the corner llereinbefore referred. to.
The parts ot' thc case A which, wllen the cover is in position, coincide witll the parts thereof thus described are provided, respectively, with a rounded opening, fn, leading into a slot, m', and a recess, 7e', in the upper edge of the case. Thus, when the cover is in place, the opening n', slot in', and recess L coincide with and form extensions of, respectively, the opening n, slot n1, and .flange-recess ll'.
Between tlleupper end of the case and the disk l is a chamber, yI, defined by lugs t" 73 or any suitable partition, and adapted to receive and contain a sliding' bolt, C, reduced toward one end, as shown at 71, from a shoulder, fr, and having the reduced part tgrooved transversely, as shown at n2, to coincide with the rounded or cylindrical opening n a when the bolt C is in its normal orlocking position, hereinafter described. On its under and inner side the main or body portion of the bolt C is hollowed or chambered out, as shown at az in Fig. 5, and provided near opposite extremities of the chamber with studs or posts g and f, upon which, respectively, are confined a leaf-spring, g', and a dog, j", extending toward the spring, and against the back of which the spring presses. From the upper side of the bolt C extends a stud, c. lhen the sliding bolt is adjusted in the chamber i andthe coverris in place, the dogf is forced into engagement with the toothed periphery of the disk B, and the stud e extends through the slot o, which corresponds in length, substantially, at least, with the limits of play of the slidingI bolt in its chamber vz'.
D is the pivotal curved bolt of the device for the suspension of thc latter, hinged at one end to the corner of the case, as shown, opposite that provided with the slot, recesses, &c., as hereinbetore described, and reduced toward its opposite end, as shown at d, FigfQ, which extends through the recess k 7c when the pivotal bolt is turned into position to be locked, and the inner edge of the part d of the curved bolt is recessed, as shown at c, Fig. 3, where it coincides with the flange-recess l in the and fastened in the usual manner, or a wire I y seal passed through the opening n ln n?. To
release the bolt D, the bolt (il must be slid back, which may be accomplished by pressure upon the stud e, whereby the bolt is dra-wn entirely into the chamber l and out of entllcrein. 'llle release o f the holt l) ill the manner described, however, necessarily turns the disk 13, owing to the engagement of the spring-dog j" therewith, and each sliding back of the bolt C sufficiently far (which is to the limit of its play in one direction and about equal to the distance between two teeth, q) to release the bolt D thus produces the display of a different numeral on the disk B, and changes the combination of thc registering mechanism.
A spring-detent, f2, prevents turning of the disk B (and conseqliently of the other disks of the registering mechanism) by the friction ofthe spring-dogf against the periphery in returning the sliding bolt to its locking position.
lf desired, instead ot' or besides employing a stud, e, as the accessible means for sliding thc bolt C, obviously the device may be adapted to have the bolt locked and actuated by any suitable form of key removable from the lock into which it lits.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a safety lock or guard for freight-car doors and the like, having a case provided with registering mechanism, substantially as described, the combination, with the case and registering mechanism, of a pivotal bolt, D, a sliding locking-bolt, C, engaging with the bolt D and registering mechanism, and an opening extending through the case and sliding bolt, with the latter in its locking position to admit a car-seal, substantially as set forth.
In a safety lock or guard for freight-car doors and the like, having a case provided with registering mechanism, substantially as described, the combination, with the case and registering mecllanism, of a pivotal bolt, D, a sliding locking-bolt, C, engaging with the registering mechanism and bolt D, a slot, o, in the cover of the case, and a stud, e, on the bolt C extending through the slot o, substantiall y as set forth. y
