METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-HOLE STRIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,061, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed December 3, 1888 Serial No. 292,446. (No modeld To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY \V. LYON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Mak- 5 iug Button-Holes; and I do hereby declare the 3 following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperiains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the method of making button-hole strips, and has for its objectto simplify the manufacture of button-holes, and also to greatly strengthen and re-enforce the button-hole strip itself; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the va- 1 rious steps followed in the manufacture of} said strips, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan of the blank from which my buttonhole strip is formed; Fig. 2, a plan showing said blank partially folded to constitute the strip; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the completed strip; Fig. l, a central longitudinal section of said strip, the flaps of one button-hole being shown in position preparatory to folding; Fig. i 5, a top view of the completed strip prepara l tory to binding; and Fig. 6, a similar view showin the side edges of the strip bound with tape, one end of the strip being turned up and sectioned.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures.
in the blank shown at Fig. 1 the long cuts 1 and shortcuts 2 form T-heads 3, which when folded and manipulated, as presently set forth, constitute the flaps of the button-holes throughout the strip. These T-heads are formed at the sides of the strip l, each head 3 being folded upon itself, so as to form a twoply flap, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
5 are the button-hole slits, which are cut. 1 within the central section of the strip in align- 1 ment with the various cross series of short cuts 2. After the flaps have been formed by folding the T-heads 3 upon themselves the sides of the strip are folded inward upon the central section of said strip, and the said T- headed flaps are passed through the slits i The manner of passing the flaps i-hroughi the slits as follows: After folding the sides of the strip inward it will be seen that the necks of the lower flaps are immediately above the slits, while the necks of the upper flaps are coincident with the necks of the lower flaps, and that the upper and lower flaps (3X- tend in opposite directions. It will be clearly seen, therefore, that the formation of the button-hole is readily effected by inserting the two flaps in succession th rough the slits, then folding them in opposite directions against the strip, and finally stitching said flaps to the strip, all of which is fully shown in Figs. 2, 3, =1, and 5.
In order that the button-holes maybe firmly barred at the ends, I bind the latter on both sides with strips 6 of tape; but this barring forms no part of my present invention, since it is a well-known way of securing the ends of a seriesof button-holes in a strip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The method of making button'holes in a strip, the same consisting in cutting buttonhole slits at suitable distances throughout the central section of the strip, forming T- headed flaps at the sides of the strip, folding said iiaps upon themselves, folding the sides of the strip inward, inserting said flaps in pairs through the slits, and folding the flaps backward in opposite directions against the strip, substantially as set forth.
2. The method of makingbutton-holes,which consists in forming a single blank having button-hole slits at proper intervals within the central section of said blank and T-headed flaps within the'opposite sides of said blank, doubling said flaps upon themselves and fold ing the sides of the blank inward, inserting the liaps through said slits and folding said flaps backward in opposite directions against 9 the blank, stitching the flaps to the blank, and finally barring the opposite ends of the button-holes, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. LYON.
