CHARLES HANSON, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
RIDING ATTACHMENT FOR PLGWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,039, dated March 5, 1889.
282,798. (No model.)
To all whom it 72mg concern: L
Be it known that I, CHARLES HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riding Attachments for Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure I of the drawings is a perspective view of a plow with my improved riding attachment connected thereto, and Fig. 2 a detail view in perspective of the spring-catch and its connections.
The present invention has for its object to provide a riding attachment that can be conveniently connected to a plow and readily disconnected therefrom when not required for use; and the invention consists in the general construction of the riding attachment and means for connecting it to the beam of the plow,as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accom ianying drawings I have shown one of many forms of plows to which my riding attachment may be connected, and therefore any detail description of the plow is deemed unnecessary, it having the usual plow, A, standard B, and beam C, also the handles D, connected by braces a b. The frame of the riding attachment consists of two beams, E, secured together at their forward ends and having a hole to receive a jointed bolt, 0, projecting from a clip, F, for attachment to the beam C of the plow, said clip being of any of the usual forms and adjustable on ihe beam, as circumstances re quire.
The distance between the beams E of the frame gradually increases as they extend rearwardly to admit the wheel G being connected between them and a guard, (I, being connected to the beams, which extends over the rim of the wheel.
To the beams E are attached standards e for si'ipporting the seat II, and also stirrups or foot-rests f are provided, which are also connected to the beams upon their outer sides.
To the beams E is secured a bracket, l,hav-
ing slotted sides g and tongues 7L, which overlap the lower edge of the beams E, as shown in Fig. 2.
A screw-bolt, 2, passes through holes in the beams E and through the slots in the sides of the bracket I, a nut, 7;, engaging with the screw-threaded end of the bolt, thereby securely holding the bracket in place on the beams and admitting of its adjustability thereon.
To the bracket I is attached a spring-catch, K, for engaging with the braces a 2) when it is desired to hold the riding attachment suspended from the ground when not required for immediate use. By means of the adjustable bracket 1 the latch K can have its position changed to adapt it to the braces of the handles of plows when differently located; also, the jointed bolt enables the plow to be kept straight when plowing on side hills.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the hand-plow, of an adjustable clip on the beam of said plow, a lateral jointed bolt projecting from said clip, and the riding attachment consisting of the beams E, secured together at their forward ends and having a hole to receive one portion of said bolt, substantially as shown and described.
- 2. The combination, with the plow, of the riding attachment consisting of two beams, E, secured together at their forward ends and connected to the plow-beam by a pivotal connection and gradually separated toward their rear ends, the wheel G between the rear ends of the beams, and the guard (Z, connected to the beams and extendin g over the rim of said wheel, substantially as shown and described.
The combination, with the plow, of the beams E, secured together at their forward ends and to the plow-beam, the bracket I, secured to the beams and having slotted sides g and tongues h, the bolt '1 passed through holes in the beams and through the slots in said sides g, and the nut is on the threaded end of said bolt, substantially as described.
el. The combination, with the plow, of the beams E, secured together at their forward ends and to the plow-beam, the bracket I, secured to the beams and having slotted sides g and tongues 71', the bolt i, passed through hereunto subscribed my name in the presence holes in the beams and through slots in said of two Witnesses. sides 9, the nut is on the end of said bolt, and the spring-catch K, attached to said bracket 5 and extending between the beams, substan- Vitnesses:
tially as and for the purpose specified. M. M. CORBETT,
In testimony that I claim the above I have SAMUEL F. OOOKE.
CHARLES HANSON.
