PATENT FFIQEQ GAS-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,022, dated March 5, less.
Application filed February 16, 1888. Serial No. 264,265. t'Nomodel.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED S. DINSMORE, of Boston, county of Sufiolk, and State of Massachusetts have invented an Improvement in Gas-Stoves, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention, relating to gas stoves, is shown embodied in a heating-stove such as employed for warming the air in an apartment.
In stoves of this kind the burner is surmounted by a drum, into which the products of combustion rise and mingle with and heat the air which is delivered nearthe lower part of the heating-drum. This drum is usually of sheet-iron, and provided with a cast-iron top having an opening and removable cover therefor. In stoves of this kind when the gas is not lighted immediately after it is turned on the drum will receive a greater or less quantity of gas, which mixes with the air and becomes eX- plosive, so that when lighted there will be a slight explosion, which is sometimes sufficient to throw the cover off from the opening in the stove-top.
The main object of the present invention is to prevent such an occurrence; and the invention consists, partly, in the oombination, with the usual heating-drum, of a double top, one portion of which is fastened to the upper edges of the drum and closes the top of the drum, but is provided with an opening having an easily-movable and self-closing cover. The other partof the top maybe made of the ornamental shape usually employed for stove-tops,
and is supported a short distance above the first part, and maybe provided with the usual removable cover or not, as preferred. There is a free air-space between the two parts of the top, and when an explosion occurs in the drum the cover in the inner part is lifted and a free vent for the expanding gases is thus afforded through the space between the two parts of the top without lifting the cover in or otherwise affecting the outer part of the top.
Figure l is a front elevation of a stove provided with a top embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of said top; Fig. 3, a plan view of the stove-top with the cover removed; and Fig. 4, a plan viei. ot' the lower portion of the stove-top and movable self-closing cover therefor, as seen with the upper portion of the stove-top removed.
The invention is shown as applied to a gas stove having a body or heating-drum, A,which may be of any suitable or usual construction, being shown as composed, mainly, of a cylindrical shell which is surmounted by a top, B.
In the present invention the top B of the heating-drum, instead of being made in a single piece or casting connected with the upper part of the drum, as heretofore, is made in two parts, 6 e, the lower one of said parts seating on and being fastened to the upper edge of the drum or shell A, and being provided with a central opening, e (shown as spanned by a bridge, (1 and provided with a vertically-movable cover, 6'', of light weight, which normally seats in the opening 6 so as to close the top of the drum and prevent the escape of the heated products at the top of the drum.
The upper part, c, of the stove-top is provided with feet or projections 6 that rest in a groove, (2, in the lower portion, thus centering the upper part, 6, on the lower part, e, and supporting the said upper part a short distance above the lower part, having a free airspace, 67, between them, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The said upper part, 6, may be provided with a central opening, 6 having the usual movable cover, a, and may also have a downwardlyprojecting ornamental flange that overhangs the upper part of the heatingdrum A, to give it the usual ornamental appearance.
The two parts of the top 6 are connected by a bolt, f, which engages the bridge e in the lower part, and a similar bridge in the upper part, if it be provided with the central opening, 6 and the cover 6 of the lower part is provided with a small central opening that receives the shank of the bolt, which thus guides it in its upward movement, permitting it to rise and fall freely. The purpose of this construction of the top B of the gas-stove is to provide a self-closing vent or opening for the escape of the gases in case they should be suddenly ex ploded, as occurs when a considerable amount of gas has escaped from the burner and mixed with the air in the stove-top before being lighted. In such event the gases on expanding will lift the cover 6 of the inner part and escape laterally through the space e betWeen the two parts of the top Without doing any damage, and as soon as the pressure is relieved the cover e will fall back and close the opening in the top, so that the stove will operate in the usual normal manner.
I claim- 1. The combination of aheating-druni of a gas-stove with a two-part top, one part of which is seated upon and closes the end of the drum, and is provided with an opening and movable cover therefor, the other part of which top is supporteda short distance above the first-mentioned part, with a space between said parts open to the outside air, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the heating-drum of the gas-stove with a two-part top, one part being fastened upon and closing the end of the drum and being provided with a central opening, and the other part being provided with feet that rest upon the first-mentioned part, a bolt fastening the said parts together, with a space open to the outside air between them, and a cover for the opening of the under part movable on and guided by the said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED S. DINSMOR'E.
