"Md M, v"/ I 5 UNTTED STATES PATnNT @rricnt GOT'lLlEB D. ELGES, OF DAVENPORT, IOW'A.
DIE. FOR STAMPING METALLlC CIGAR lViOLDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,954, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed May 17, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', GOTTLIEB I). ELGES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Stamping .lletallie Cigar-Molds, of which the following is a speeiticatirn.
My invention relates to the construction 01' dies for stamping cigar-molds of that class described in Letters Patent No. 372,607 to my self, dated November 1, 1887; and the objects are to construct the female die in two parts, so that the metallic blank, when located between such parts, may have its upper portion stamped a mold and its lower portion formed as a fin to give the mold flexibility and convenienee for use. I attain these objects by the mechanism. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the two parts formingihe female die. Fig. 2 a perspective viewof the metallic blank folded and riveted or otherwise fasten ed together, the upper edges being flared. Fig. is aperspeetive view of the mold formed from the blank by means of the male die stamping it, when the tin is held between the two parts of the female die. Figa is atop view of the female die with the blank inserted between the two parts ready for icing stamped out by the male die; and Fig. 5 is a side view of the male die.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A and B are the two parts forming the female die, the precise form as to length and size of depression at the meeting edges of the two parts being varied as maybe desired. One of the parts, A, is firmly seated upon a suitable bed-plate, and the other part, B, is also seated upon the bed-plate and moved Forward and back, as may be desired, by a vise or other suitable carrier, the depression at the meeting edges being opposite. The part 1'3 is moved backward, so that the fin F of the metallic blank 0 may be placed between the right-angled edges of the two parts below the depressions, and then firmly secured in position by the vise or other suitable means of forcing the two parts together.
G is the male die formed to concisely fit the depression in the two parts of the female die when brought together with the blank between,
The male die G is lowered upon the upper flared edges of the metallic blank C, and then struck a heavy blow by a falling weight or other suitable device suiiieient to drive the male die and metallic blank closely into the depression of the two parts of the female die, thus forming the metallic blank into a halfmold, D, and retaining upon its under surface the fin F. The male die is then raised and removed and the two parts of the female die separated, and the mold thus formed released.
I have illustrated but one method for foreing the male die into the depression of the female die and forming the blank into a mold. There are many well-known methods of operating the ntale die for stz'nnping metal in the depression of the female die; hence I do not enumerate the several methods, as my invention may he adopted in any; also, any suitble means may be adopted for securing part B of the female die to the carrying-block in a rise, or other in eaus for movin it to and from the other part, A, and securing it in position.
Female dies formed by depressions in a sin.- gle piece of metal are old; but I am not aware in two parts for the purpose of holding the lower portion of the folded metallic blank between the right-angled edges of the two parts to form a fin on the lower surface of the mold while such mold is being stamped in the upper portion of said blank.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A female die having a depression in which to stamp metallic cigar-molds, composed of two halves, between which the lower portion of the metallic blank is held and its form retained, notwithstanding the operation of stamping the upper part oi said blank into l the depression of the die and forming it into a mold, substaittiall x as described.
GOTTLIEB D. ELGES.
ll'itnesses:
