MOVABLE TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,672, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed July 24, 1888, Serial No. 280,881. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD TEICHMANN, of l-lrooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Movable Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an im nioved movable toy for children; and it consists of a toy figure which is supported at the hind legs by a crank-axle provided with wheels and propelled by an actuating-rod that is connected loosely with said crank axle and guided in an or opening at the rear end of the toy figure.
The invention consists, secondly, of a toy figure supported at the hind legs by a wheeled crank-axle, and operated by an actuated rod connected loosely to said axle, and guided in an opening or eye in the body of the figure, said body being made of two parts which are hinged together, the front part being connected by a pivot-rod with the cranloaxle, so as to oscillate the front part of the figure when moving the hind part, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body or shell of my improved movable toy, which body is made in the shape of an elephant, bear, frog, or any other suitable figure. The body A is formed of a hind part, a, and of a hinged front part, (1. The hind legs of the body A are supported by a crankaxle, 13, to which are applied fixed wheels Z). To the crank-axle B loosely applied the lower end, (I, of an actuatinghandle-rod, C, said end being bent spirally and integral with the rod, so as to form an eye or sleeve in which the axle I is forced to rotate. The actuating-rod (l passes through an eye or opening, cl, of the hind part of the body A. A connecting-rod, D, is pivoted to the crank-axle I and to the front part, (,L', of the body A.
My improved toy is operated as follows: The wheels of the crank-axle rest on the floor, the figure being pushed forward by the actuating handle red C, which causes the body, by the rotation of the crank-axle B, to be alternately raised and lowered on the rod (1. The action imparted by the crank-axle l3 and rod C- is a rising and falling one as the figure is moved forward on the floor. Simultaneously therewith the action of the hind part imparts, by the connecting-rod D, an oscillating motion to the hinged front part, so that it falls and rises alternately with the rising and fallingmotion' of thehind part. This is produced by the connectingrod, which is pivoted to the crank-axle and front part, and which, in connection with the rising and falling motion of the hind part of the body, imparts an oscillating motion to the hinged front part. A kind of hoppin motion is imparted to the toy figure by the joint operation of the actuating-rod C, the crank-axle B, and connecting-rod D on the hind part and hinged front part of the body, whereby considerable amusement is given to the children, while the toy can be furnished at comparatively low expense, owing to the simplicity of its construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Iaten t I. The combination, with the body or shell of a toy figure, said body being provided with a guide opening or eye, of a crank-axle pivoted at the ends of said cranks to said body at one end of the same, wheels or rollers attached to said crank-axle, and an actuating handle-rod that is applied loosely by an eye or sleeve to the crank-axle andguided in the opening or eye of the body, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the body or shell of a toy figure composed of a hind part having a guide opening or eye and a hinged front part, of a wheeled crank-axle pivoted to the hind part, an acuating handlerod applied loosely to the crank-axle and passed through said guide-opening, and a connecting-rod pivoted to the crank-axle and the frontpart, whereby a falling and rising motion is imparted to the front part alternately with the rising and falling mot-ion of the hind part, substantially as set forth.
