GARBAGE BOX 0E RECEIVER. No. 398,579. Patented Feb. 26, 1889.
ATTORNEYS.

\VILLL\M ll. BUCKLEY, J R., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARBAGE BOX OR RECEIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 898,579, dated February 2G, 1889.
Application filed May 17, 1888x .To all 'who/11, it Y11m/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BUcKLnY, J r., a citizen ol the nited States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garbage Boxes or Receivers, which impr wement fully set l'orth in the followingl speciticat ion and accompany ing drawings.
My invention relates to iinproven'ients in garbage boxes or receivers, and the object is to produce a device which will overcome all the objections and inconveniences attendant upon the present modes ot clearing away garbage.
A iifurther object is to provide a device of the character and for the purpose mentioned which will be easy ot application, neat in appearance, thoroughly etlicient for the purpose, and inexpensive of production.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of a trame adapted 'to be secured to l a fence or o1 her support and a casting adapted to be secured to an oscillating box, which casting and box tilt in said frame.
It further consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafterset forth and claimed.
Figure l represents a front elevation of a garbage box or vessel embodying my invention attached in position to a fence, as it appears from the outside when in its normal position. Fig. i' represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof, the box being illustrated in dotted lines in the position it assumes when tilted outward to discharge its content-s.
Similar letters ot reference indicate eorrespending parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of a fence, gate, or other structure to which the vessel is attached, and in which is l made an opening', d.
B designates a metal frame or sash secured in the opening o.
C designates a plate or casting secured to l the upper outer face of the vessel or receptacle D, which vessel is preferably of an oblong shape, and the casting C is provided with lugs c, through which a rod, l), passes, which i Serial No. 274,132. (No model.)
is journaled in the trame B, forming a hinge or pivot for the vessel, and permits it to be tilted outward and inward.
The casting C is further provided with stops c', for limiting the outward movement ot the vessel, lock c2, and a handle or pull, c3, lor pulling the vessel outward for the purpose ot discharging its contents.
The operation is as follows: The box or receiver D is normally arranged on the inside of the fence, dre., to receive the garbage or waste matter, and is locked from the outside. The garbage-collector, or the person whose business it is to attend to the matter, unlocks the box and tilts it outward by means of the handle, causing it to discharge its contents on the outside into a bucket, pail, or other receptacle. The vessel is then tilted back to its normal position and locked ready to be refilled. [from the inside. as will be readily und erstood.
ll' hen the vessel is in position lfor discharg ing its cont ents, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. i', the stops c', which are above the axis of the box, abutagainst the bottom crosspiece oi the trame l-, thus limiting the over turning motion of the box or vessel and relieving the axis of the same of strain.
It is evident that by providing a device of this character the many inconveniences are avoided, there is no danger of damage to the health from the decayed matter, and the device is simple and cheap, thus possessing' all the requisites calculated to commend the device as practical and highly beneiicial.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. garbagebox consisting ol a trame, a casting hinged or pivoted thereto, and a ves sel secured to the casting, said parts being combined substantially as and for the pur pose described.
. ln a garbage-box, the combination, with.
a metallic lfra1ne,ol` a casting pivoted thereto, ,i
and a vessel secured to said casting above the axis of the box, adapted to abut against the bottom of the frame when the vessel is over turned, substantially as described,
3. ln a garbage-box, the combination, with a frame, of a casting pivoted thereto, carrying i frame B, Said parts being Combined Substan- L vessel and provided with stops, a handle or tially as described. pull, and a look, substantially as described. n A T f 4. In a. garbage-box, the metal frame B, the X M U 'BL CKLEY JR 5 casting C, secured to the box and having lugs 'vitnesses:
c, With rod B passing through said lugs, and JOHN A. WTIEDERSHEIM, the Stops c', adapted t0 abut against the l VM. N. MOORE.
