COVER FASTEN ER FO R BUTTER-TUBS.
SPEGIFIUATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,524, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed Au ust 20, 1888. Serial No. 283,278. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ERWIN WILLIAiTs MAX- SON, of \Vest Lenox, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CovenFasteners for Butter-Tubs and the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acerence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction and application to a butter-tub and to its cover of devices for readily fastening and unfastening and removing the cover. The nature of these devices will readily appear from the following:
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top view of a butter-tub and its cover with my invention applied; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical central section in the line 00 0c of Fig. 1; Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, details of the fasteners.
A represents a tub or similar vessel; B, its removable cover; 0 C, the ears secured to the tub by means of a hoop, D; E, one of the clamping-hooks for holding the cover to the tub; F, the other clamping-hook for the same purpose and for aiding in tightening the cover; G,Aan eccentric lever for tightening or loosening the clamp-hooks.
Each of the ears (I is made, as shown, with its vertical edges rounded off, and with a vertical slot, 1, and preferably with a short pin, 2, at its back, and with a projection, 3, at its front, and for the following-named purposes: When the hoop D is placed on the tub and the hoop is driven to place over these cars, the pin entering the wood of thetub aids in holding it to its place, and the slot allows the hoop to be driven or bent down into the slot, thus securing the hoop firmly and prei'enting its dropping off in case it should loosen from overdrying or shrinking of the tub. The projections 3 strengthen the ears and prevent the possible escape of the ears even if the hoop i should possibly get loose, and also prevents the undue rising'of the hoop on the ears, so as to prevent the entrance of the H s of the hooks into the slot above the hoop.
The cover I first provide with two strong parallel cleats, H H, fastened to and extending across its top, with a space, 6, left between them. The fastening attachments which are to work in conjunction with the ears C G, first above described, are constructed and are attached in the space and to the cleat or cleats, as will now be described.
The hooks E and F have each an inwardlyprojecting tapering point or tip, 7, adapted not only to enter the slot in its respective ear and above the hoop, as shown, (these ears being on opposite sides of the tub,) but the length of such point may properly be such as to extend a reasonable distance through the slot into the body of the tub. This also increases the security of the hold or purchase. The hook E has at its other end, at one side of the same, a projecting pin, 8, which enters acorresponding hole in the inside of one of the cleats, so that when the hook is inserted in its place by means of this pin it works betweenand is protected by the cleats and is out of the way of harm, and, as will be seen, is easily at tached when the cleats are put on. The other hook, F, instead of a pin, has a strong ring, 9, in its upper end, for a purpose presently to be described. In conjunction with this hook I use the lever G, which has on one side a pivotal pin, 10, projecting like the pin 8 on hook E, and, like it, entering a hole in one of the cleats. It has also an eccentric and curved rib, 11, and stop-pin 12 on its opposite side, and which are adapted to enter the ring 9. In putting this lever and the hook F to place, the pin. 10 enters the hole in the cleat and the eccentric rib and pin 12 enter the ring .9. \Vhen thus placed, the lever, being turned on its pivot or fulcrum pin 10, acts by its eccentric portion or rib 11 to raise and lower and to move inward and outward the hook F, the
I distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the eccentric ll determining the extent of the throw, and the pin 12 controlling the move ment of the hook and compelling the latter to obey the movement of the eccentric. Moving the lever outward loosens the hooks and cover and moving the lever inward tightens them all. The hook E being first inserted in its ear and the lever being turned outward carries the hook F down to a position where it may enter the other car, and the lever being next turned inward (backward) now draws this hook inward and makes a very tight close clamping of the cover to the tub. hen the lever is fully turned inward and downward, it lies in the space between the cleats, out of danger either of accidental displacement or of damage; and a staple, 13, in the side of one of the cleats may serve to hold the lever to place, thus serving as a lever-catch, the lever passing by and under the staple when in its place after tightening.
I claim-- 1. The ears 0, each having a slot, 1, and projection 3, combined with a hoop bent down into such slots, substantially as shown, and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with the slotted ears 0 and with the cover and its described cleats, the fastening-hooks E F, supported on pivots between the cleats and adapted to engage with said ears and also to be swung on their pivots to fasten or to release the cover.
3. In combination with a cover, the hook F, having a ring at its upper end, and the eccentric lever G, provided with the fulcrum-pin 10 and with the curved rib l1 and pin 12, all substantially as described.
4. In combination With the clcated cover, the hooks E F, eccentric lever G, slotted ears C 0, applied to the tub, and the hoop applied to the ears, as set forth.
ER\VIN \VILLIAMS MAXSON.
