BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,372, dated February 26, 1889.

Application filed November 6, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAAC E. BENNET'I, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newton,in the county of Jasper useful Improvement in Harness-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to prevent the dangers and annoyances incident to driving-reins and other objects catching on the tongues of buckles that project outward through perforations in the leather straps that are adjustably connected by means of buckles.

My invention consists in the construction an d eombi nati on of two frames, as herein a t ter set forth, in such a manner that the tongue will project inward from one of the frames, and the cross-bars of the frame serve as loops, so that when there is tension on the strap the tongue will be pressed inward through the strap and completely concealed and protected from contact with any extraneous objects.

'i is a tongue that projects downward from the under side of the bar f. The ends of the bars (Z are curved upward so as to bring the end bar g into a higher plane for the purpose of admitting a strap to pass under it and to make it serve as a loop.

in is a cross-bar formed on or fixed to the central portions of the side bars (I in such a manner that a strap can be doubled around it, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, to connect the strap with the buckle without stitching or riveting; or a strap may be doubled around and then permanently fastened by means of a rivet or by sewing in a common way, and as required, to connect the buckle with different parts of a harness.

I claim as my invention- The combination of the frame composed of side bars a and cross-bars Z) and c, said bar Z) provided with an aperture, and the frame com posed of the side bars (I, the end barf, having a tongue on its under side, the bar and loop 5 g, and a cross-bar, 17/, substantially as shown and described.
