UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON Z. BULGER, OF. MARTINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
R O A D C A RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,777, dated February 12, 1889.
Application filed June 28, 1888. Serial No. 278,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON Z. EULGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Martinsburg, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Garts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my invention and is a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
The invention relates to improvements in road-carts; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the iron axle having the downwardly-cranked ends B.
0 represents two C-shaped strap-springs having the long arms D resting on the blocks E, placed longitudinally on the upper side of the main portion of the axle, where they are secured by means of the clips at. The blocks E are preferably of wood, so that when the clips are tightened the spring metal will be embedded slightly into the wood and rigidly held. The curved end of the springs C is provided with an eye, from which depend the links I), which pivotally engage at their other ends the eyes of the central or main leafspring F, to the center of which the seat G is bolted.
II represents side bars bolted or otherwise secured to the under side of the seat and extended to the cross-bar I, to which they are connected by the hinge-joint K. nrved metal straps L are bolted at one end to the cross-bar I and at the opposite ends to the seat, as shown, and parallel slats M, secured to the straps L, form a foot-rest.
N is a metal rod secured at its ends to the shaft-clips O. The said rod N materially strengthens the axle and prevents its breaking or spreading outwardly.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a road-cart, the combination of the iron axle having the downwardly-cranked ends, the shaft-clips, the rod N, secured by said clips, the blocks E on the upper main portion of the axle, the C-springs having the long arm resting on said blocks, the links b, the leaf-spring F, the seat, and the side bars bolted to the seat and having a hinge-connection with the cross-bar, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. Z. BULGER.
