IMPROVEMENT IN sAsH-FASTENERS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,737, dated September 1, 18613.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that I, WILLIAM S. MALLORY, of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of N ew York, have invented a new Sash- Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in so arranging a sash-fastener that the power eX- erted or act of raising the window will undo the fastening and allow the window to be raised to the desired height, and held at any desired elevation, and when the sash is down it is securely fastened so as not easily to be unfastened from the outside.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I willproceed to describe the construction and operation of my improved sash-fastener.

The drawing represents the sash down and securely fastened. I make a thin plate of brass, cast-iron, or other suitable metal, and bed the same in the inside of the lower part of the sash. It is about two-thirds the width of the window in length, and is pivoted or hung upon a screw at such a point in the lever that its weightat the outer end will hold the fastening or lunar-shaped dog in the notch in the window-frame. The dog is hung loosely upon a screw, and has a slot or opening in which the lever plays loosely, so that the dog may be detached from the notch in the window-frame or suffered to remain there. I place two knobs or handles upon the lower part of the sash-frame upon the inside, for the convenience of using both hands to raise the window only one of them, however, is connected with the lever so as to operate it. Whena sufficient power is exerted upon this knob or handle to raise the window, the lever will be acted upon so as to detach the dog from the notch in the window-frame and allow the window to be raised. l

In the drawing the lever is marked b, the dog a, the knobs by letters d and e, and the screw upon which the lever is piv-oted by the letter o.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The described arrangement ofthe lever b, fulcrum o, and knobs d and @,in combination with the cam-shaped hook or fastener, all arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
