STEPHEN G. BALDYVIN, OF MARION, INDIANA.
INKSTAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,330, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed October 18,1888. Serial No. 288,436. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. BALDWIN, of Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
- clear, and exact description of the invention,
and clean and free from dust and preventing it frombecoming thick and muddy. This is accomplished by providing an ink-well and a normally-closed supply-reservoir from which the ink can be drawn into the well in such quantities only as are needed for immediate use.
\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the article, and 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
The article essentially comprises a body, a, forming an ink-supply reservoir, an ink-well, Z), depending from the front portion of the top wall of the body into the interior of the same, and a lift-pump or elevator, c, or equivalent device, to raise and discharge into the well the 5 desired quantity of ink from the reservoir.
The body is preferably cast or otherwise formed integral and hollow, with the portion e extended upwardly from the rear portion,
of its top and the well 1) depending from the top wall below and in front of the raised portion into the interior of the body.
' The top of the raised portion is preferably piston, 1', islocated in the tube, and is provided with a rod, 7:, extending up the same, and by which the piston. is operated.
The ink-well is provided with one or more discharge-apertures,j, near its upper portion, openin into the interior of the body, to prevent overflow of the well, for when all over a certain quantity of ink is pumped into the well the overflow passes back into the reser voir.
The operation of the article is obvious. When it is desired to raise ink and discharge it into the well, the piston is reciprocated, raising the ink and discharging it through mouth g onto the channel 72, from which it flows into the well. It should be observed that the pump is entirely inclose'd except the upper end of the tube, which is closed, and the upper handle end of the operating-rod.
It is evident that the article will. keep the ink from evaporating and also keep it clean and clear an d from becoming thick and muddy. It is also evident that the invention is not limited to any particular size or shape.
\Vhat I claim is 1. An inkstand comprisii'ig a hollow body forming a normally-closed supply-reservoir, an ink-well in the upper portion of the same, and a pump or elevator in the body to raise the ink from the reservoir to the well, substantially as set forth.
2. An inkstand comprising a hollow body to form an ink-supply reservoir, an ink-well depending from the top wall of the same into its interior, and a pump or elevator to raise the liquid from the reservoir to the well, comprising a vertical tube opening into the reservoir and extending up through the body and provided with a discharge-mouth to discharge onto a channel extending to the well, and a piston in the tube provided with an operatingrod above the body, as set forth.
3. An inksi'and comprising a body having In testimony that i claim the foregoing as an internal ink-supply reservoir, an ink-well my own I ailix my signature in presence of 10 in the body depending into the reservoir and two witnesses. provided with one or more apertures in. its
