SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,515, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed January 20, 1888. Serial No. 261,401. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW DAVID SHU- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cans; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed I11 the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a can provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a central transverse vertical section of the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the body of the can, having the flared neck B at its top, in which the lid 0 fits. This lid 0 is hollow, having a confined-air space, D, and is tapered toward its lower side to fit in the flared neck of the can. The lateral flange E at the upper edge of the lid bears on the upper edge of the neck B.
G G designate openings which extend vertically through the lid, and H H designate necks arranged on the upper side of the lid and forming, practically, continuations of the openings G G, as shown. The necks H H are provided with covers I I, which are hinged thereto and provided on their under sides with the rims J J, which pass into the said necks, as clearly shown. The covers are further provided around their edges with the rims K K, which engage around the upper edges of the necks H H.
Rubber packing-rings L L are arranged around the rims J J, between the same and the rims K K, and bear upon the upper edges of the necks when the covers are closed, and thus form tight joints. The covers are hinged to the outer sides of the necks, so that when either one is open or thrown back it will be supported by the other, and if both be opened at the same time they will rest against and The free edges of the covers are provided with spring-latches M M, which engage catches N N on the sides of the necks. These latches M M consist of the pivoted levers O 0, having detents P P on their lower ends to engage the catches, and
spiral springs Q Q under the upper ends of the levers to normally hold the detents in engagement with the catches. \Vhen the upper ends of the latches are depressed, the detents are disengaged from the catches and the covers may be raised.
A rubber packing-ring, R, is arranged around the sides of the lid 0, whereby when the lid is put in place on the can the ring will pass within the neck and be compressed, forming an air-tight and water-tight joint.
S designates a band or plate which extends transversely across the center of the lid O. A clutch, T, is attached to each end of theband, and consists of the threaded shank U, inserted through an aperture in the end of the band or plate S, and having a detent, V,0n its lower end to engage the catch IV 011 the side of the neck 13. A thumb-nut, X, is screwed on the upper end of the threaded shank and bears on the upper side of the band or plate, thereby firmly securing the lid in place. It will be understood, of course, that one of these clutches is provided at each end of the band or plate, so that when the thumb-screws are tightened the bandis drawn down with great force. The pressure of the band or plate forces the tapered lid into the flared neck of the can, thereby compressing the packingring and forming an air-tight joint.
By making the lid in the manner described, with an inclosin g air -space,I avoid the formation of numerous angles, which are difficult to clean, as the lid has an even under surface with no interior or re-entering angles to contain dirt. After the milk has been put in the can, or before, if desired, the lid is put in place, and the securing band or plate is arranged, as above described, to clamp the lid to the can. This lid is designed to be removed only when it is desired to clean the can, the milk being inserted and removed through the openings or passages G G. It will be seen that the covers of these passages are more easily and quickly operated than the lid.
By providing the two openings G G, I am enabled to employ a cooler which may be removably supported in one of the openings and closed by the cover thereof. The cooler receives ice to keep the milk cool, as will be readily understood, and in cold Weather it may be used to hold cream, thus dispensing with the use of an additional vessel.
The invention, it Will be seen, consists in an improvement in lids for cans, and can be applied to any can noW in use.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the can, of the curved lid fitting in the upper end of the same and having the necks H II, the band passing transversely over the curved face of the lid between said necks, and the clutches mounted in the ends of said band and engaging catches at the upper end of the can, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the can, of the curved lid fitting in the upper end of the same and having the necks H H, the covers 20 a hinged to the upper ends of said necks and my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 0 presence of two Witnesses.
