To (all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, RICHARD FINN, residing at Chicago, in the county lof Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supply and lYaste Valves, of which the following :is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation showing the supply-valve open and the waste-valve closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation with the upper end of the case and the pull-rod broken oft', showing the 'supply-valve closed and the waste-valve open. Fig. 3 is a detail in section of the supply and waste valves.
The object ot' this invention is to construct a supply and waste valve for use with waterclosets or in other places where it is desired to have a supply when required, and after the supply is shut oiifhave the waste run ott, and for such purpose it desirable that the waste and supply shall work sim ultaneously-that is, when the supply is open the waste must be closed, and when the supply is closed the waste is open; and to attain this object of a simultaneous closing and opening of the supply and waste is the main object of this invention; and its nature consists in the several parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents a shell or case of a cylindrical shape in cross-section, as shown, and having one end open and the other closed.
B is a shell or case corresponding in shape to that of the shell or case A,and screwthreaded or otherwise connected with the case A, and, as shown, the case B has a ange, a', on its exterior, to coact with the end of the case A and forni a tight joint at the juncture of the two cases, and the lower end of the case B is provided with ears or a iiange, b, by means of which it is attached to a suitable support. The object in making the case or shell in two parts is to enable access to be readily had to the interior for replacing-the valve or making other repairs.
C is a nipple screw-threaded on its exterior for attachment to a water-supply pipe and having an opening or passage, c, leading to the chamber of the case A B.
I) is the receiving-chamber of the case A B, in which chamber is a diaphragm or wall, d, standing inclined and having atits center an 55 opening, e, for the passage of the water-supply.
E is a chamber in the case A, above the diaphragm (I, into which the water-supply passes when the supply-valve is open. 6
F is a nipple screw-threaded on its exterior for the attachment ot a pipe leading to the place to be supplied with water and having a passage, j', which forms an outlet from the chamber E.
Gis the supply-valve, of rubber or other suitable material, and of the shape shown or other shape by which the opening or .passage e can be closed.
H is atube, on which is secured the ball- 7o valve G, between a head, h, of the tube and a washer, g, and, as shown, the lower end of the tube Il is screw-threaded to receive a continuation, II, of the tube II, which continuai tion passes through a packing-box, 71,', and 75 enters the waste-chamber in the case B.
I is a ball-valve, of rubber or other suitable material, and of the form shown or other form that will properly seat on the head h and close the passage through the tube Il.`
J is a cage or basket inclosing the valve I, and screw-threaded or otherwise secured at its lower end'to the head h, and having in its side wall openings fi, through which the Waste water can pass, and having also .on its upper 85 end a cap or cover, j, which may be formdw' with the cage J, or be a separate piece screwthreaded or otherwise secured to the cage.
K is a stem the lower end of which passes through the cover j and enters the cage J, and, 9o as shown, this stem has a screw-threaded smaller portion, 7:., to receive the valve I and allow the valve to be adjusted to seat properly on the head h.
L is a lever, to which is attached by a pin 9 5 or pivot, l, an eye, lo', on a head, K', attached to the upper end of the stem K.
M is an arm or bracket, to which is pivote/d the end of the lever L by a pin or pivot, on..
N is a neck on the upper end of the case A, Ioo around which is placed the ring carrying the f arm or bracket M.
O is a cap screw-threaded onto the neck N, and holding the ring of the bracket IWI in place, and through which passes the stem K, suitable packing being provided to make a tight tit.
P is a weight on the lever L, by whieh the stein K is forced down.
Q a chain, or rope attached to the outer end of the lever L, and by means of lwhich the i shutting olii' the supply, and when the valve lever is raised to lift the stem K.
R is the waste chamber in the case lll, formed by a partititm, n, and a wall, o, and into which the waste-tube ll ll leads.
is a nipple for the attachment ol.' the waste-pipe, and having a passage leadi n g into the chamber R.
The stein l( is passed through the cover j of the cage J, and to its end la is attached the valve Land the lower end oli' the cage .l is screwed or otherwise secured onto the head 71y of the tube H, to have the valve l seat on the head 71 of the tube l-lV when the valve is down. The ball-valve G is placed ou the tube ll and the washer f/ slipped on the tube, and the tube ll and its continuation ll are screwed together, connecting the stem K, cage J, valve I, valve Gr, and tube ll ll together. The tube H passed through the stuffing-box lt into the chamber R, and the stem l( is passed through the cover C) and the two sections A lof the ease screwed or otherwise secured together. The head K is attached to the lever L, having thereon the weight P, and at`- tached to the arm or bracket M, and the lever is connected with the chain or rope Q, and the case attached to its support by the ears Z) or otherwise, when the device is ready for use by connecting the nipple (T to the supply-pipe for the water and the nipple l? to the pipe leading to the place to be supplied and attaehin g a waste-pipe to the nipple S.
The valves G and l are adjusted in sueh relation to each other that when the valve l is forced down by the dropping ol the lever L through the stem K it will close the passage through the tube ll Il and at the same time open the valve (l, and when the valve l .is raised by drawing on the chain or rope (2 to lift the lever L and raise the stem lx'. such action will raise the valve G and close the passage e between the chambers I) and E.
In use, to open the supply the chain or rope Qis released, allowingl the weight l to drop and throw down the lever L, Vforcing down the stem l( and valve l, closing the passage through the tube lfl H and ope'ningthe valve G, so that water can enter through the passage c into the chamber l) and pass through the openingl e into the chamber E, and thence through the passage f to the place to be supplied, and when the required supply is had the lever L is raised, raising the valve I through the stem K, and at the same time through the cage J', raising the valve (i and (1l is closed the valve l is open, allowing the waste to pass into the chamber E and thence through the opening ot' the cage J into the tube ll to enter the waste-eliainher R and pass therefrom,
Alt will be seen that when the valve (l is open, as in Fig. il, to allow a supply, the valve l is closed down to shut ott' the escape of the waste, and when the valve G is closed, as in Fig. 2, to shut ott' the supply, the valve l is open, allowing the waste to eseape through the tube ll II, the result beingthat t he movenient of the valve l to elose the waste will open the supply-valve, and the movement oli' the valve I to open the waste will close the supply-val ve, so that this valve I controls in eiiect both the supply and wasteby operating the sup] )lyvalve.
The tube Il ll. is made in two parts, so that the ball-valve G can be readily removed tiobe replaced by a new valve, and the cage is detachal'ily attached to the ball-valve tube Il, so that it can be removed to replace the valve I whenever required.
The tube H passes thrmigh the stuffingbox with su tli cien t friction to prevent the valve (lr from falling away from the valve l when the parts are as shown in Fig. 2, or the end of the tube ll can be made to strike the bet'- tom ol' the chamber R and hold the valve, or a stop can be placed on the tube to strike the stalling-box.
