STUFF-REGULATOR FOR PAPER-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,306, dated December 11, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
-le it known that I, LYMAN E. SMITH, of Mittineague, in the county of llampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and IIIIIJIOYGtl StuiiT-Regulator for Paper-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new andv improved stuiii-regulator for papermachincs for regulating automatically the How of: pulp from the pulp-box to the paperniachine.
The invention consists in the construction of parts and cmnbinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line :1: J5 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line y of Fig. 2.
The pulp-box A, of suitable size and shape, is provided with the transverse partition B, extending from the bottom of the pulp-box upward to within a short distance of the upper open end of the box. The longitudinal partition (1 extends in the box A between the partition B and the end of the box A, said partition reaching from the top to the bottom. The two partitions]; and C thus divide the box A into the three coin iiartmei'its D, E, and F, of which the compartment 1) is the pulp-receiver, and is connected near its bottom by the pipe G with the pump for pumping the paper-pulp from the tank into said receiver I). The pulp passing over the transverse partition B into the compartment E is discharged from the same through the pipe 11 upon the paper-maehine, and the pulp pass ing over the partition I and into the compartment E is discharged from the same by the pipe I back into the tank connected with the pump discharging into the receiver D.
Near the upper edges of the sides of the box A is arranged a trai'isverse rod, J, 011 which is adjustably held the gate K, extending downward in a slightly-inclined position and resting with its lower end on the upper inclined edge of the partition B. In the up per part of the receiver I) is hinged a pan, 1 provided in its rear end with the upwardlyextendingrod N, the [free end of which passes over the top oi the gate K and through the forked end of the lever O, pivoted at O to the partition P, which is a continuation of the transverse partition B, being placed between the partition 0 and the rear side of the pulpbox A, with which side the said partition is connected.
The lever O is provided with a rearwardlvextending part carrying a weight, for countel-balancing said lever O. The latter is also provided with a (lOWll\VHlLllyQXtGll(llllg gate, resting against the partition I, and when the pan is in its lowest position having its front edge in line with the front edge of said partition P.
The operation is as follows: The pump forces the paper-pulp through the pipe G into the receiver I), which is thus tilled, so that the pan Ii rides on the level of the pulp, and the pulp is discharged over the upper edge of the partition I into the compartments E and F,tro1n which part of thepulp passes through the pipe II upon the paper-machinc, and the surplus pulp in the receptacle F passes through the pipe I back into the tank connected with the pump. .The pulp discharged into the compartment E passes through the opening formed between the extension-gate O and the gate K, and the latter is set on the rod .l to give the required opening necessary for a certain thickness or weight of paper. \Vith every stroke of the pump the pulp rises in the receiver D, raising the pan L with it, after which the latter settles back again as the pulp flows over the partition B into the compartments E and F. This up-and-down motion of the pan Ii does not alifect the lever O, as the lower prong ol the latter rests with its edge against the bottom of the rod N on account of the counterbalancing-weight so that the rod Non the up-and-down motion of the pan L moves between the two forks of the lever 0 without aliiecting the latter. As soon as the pulp is thick it does not tiowvery readily over the partition B, and consequently riseshigher in the I'GCQlX'Ql D, so as to raise the pan L sufficiently for the rod N to strike against the upper prong of the forked lever 0, thereby imparting a swinging motion to the lever O, which assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. The extensiongate 0 is thus moved sidewise ox er the free edge of the partition P, thus diminishing the opening between the partition and the gate K, thereby cutting off the flow of paper-pulp from the receiver D into the compartment YVhen the paper-pulp becomes thin, the pan L sinks downward and the rod N presses on the lower prong of the forked lever 0, thus again increasing the opening between the gate K and the partition P as the extensiongate 0 swings toward the rear side of the box A. It will thus be seen that a uniform amount of pulp will always flow from the receiver D into the compartment E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a stu tf-regulator for paper-maehines, the combination, with a pulp-box and a pan hinged therein and provided with a projecting rod, of a pivoted and counterbalanced lever, with which the rod of the pan engages, and an extension-gate secured to the said le ver and adapted to increase or diminish the opening leading to the discharge-eompartment connected with the paper-machine, substantially as described.
2. In a stuff-regulator for paper-machines, the combination, with a pulp-box and a pan. hinged in the receiving-compartment thereof and provided with a projecting rod, of a forked and counterbalanced lever, with which the rod of the pan engages, an extension-gate secured to the said lever, and an adjustable gate for regulating the flow of pulp from the receiver into the discharge-compartinent, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a stint-regulator for paper-machines, the combination, with the pulp-box A, provided with partitions forming the receiver D an d the discharge-compartm ents E and F, an d the rod J, secured to the sides of said box, of the gate K, held adjustably on said rod, a pan, L, hinged in the receiver D and provided with a rod, N, the lever O, and the extensiongate 0 secured to said lever O and adapted to increase or diminish the opening leading to the v discharge-compartnient E, substantiall y as shown and described.
