DEVICE FOR SECURING WIRE LATHING TO THE WOODEN JOISTS AND STUDS 0F BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,952, dated June 5, 1888.
Application filed February 13, 1888. Serial No. 263,905. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAnsELIUs HEGBOM, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Wire Lathing to the Vooden Joists and Studs of Buildings, which are fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part thereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents a section of the ceiling, showing the ceiling-joist with the wire lathing In this figure the wires E F, on which the lathing rests, and to which it is secured, are shown as running parallel with and over thejoist A A A. Fig. 9 represents a section 'of said ceiling -joist with my invention shown thereon without the wire lathing, and wherein the wires E E run transversely across the joist. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view on the line of one of the joists, showing the edge of the wire lathing B B, one of the wires E E,with thelacings c c, by means of which. the lathing is secured to said wires, and the short metallic tubes 0 G C, with the staples D D D therein,by means of which said wires E E are secured to said joist A. Figs. 3 and at are views similar to Fig. '2, but showing modified forms of construction. A twisted wire, E, is shown in Fig. 3 and a metallic strip in Fig. 4,instcad of the plain wire shown in Fig. 2, and nails D D are used instead of staples. Figs. 5 and 6 represent short metallic tubes interposed between the wires E E and the joist A A,through which the staples or nails D D, as the case may be, pass. Fig. 7 representsone of thestaples,and Fig. 8 one ofthe nails, by means of which the wires E E are secured to the joist A A.

One of the objects of my invention is to prevent the wire lathing or plaster from coming in contact with the wooden joist or studd ng A A and to provide an air-space between the joist and the plaster. This object I accomplish by means of the metallic tubes 0 O C. These tubes are made of sufficient diameter to receive the staples or nails D D, and may be of any required length, and are provided at one end with the sharp points 0 O.
E E are wires which are stretched either lengthwise with or transversely across the joist A A A, to which the wire lathing is to be attached, and are secured to said joist by means of the staples D D, as shown in the drawings.

The method of using my invention is as follows: The sharp points G O of the metallic tubes 0 C are driven into the joist, said tubes being ranged in straight lines and at a distance of, say, six inches apart, and of uniform height along the joist and studs to which the wire lathing is to be attached. The wires EE are now stretched taut over the tops of said tubes and firmly secured at their ends and the staples D D driven in place. The wire lathing is then, spread over the walls or ceilings thus prepared and secured to the wires E E by means of the wire lacings e e.
In place of the plain wires E E a twisted wire, such as shown in Fig. 3, may be used, or a metallic strip, such as shown in Fig. 4,
and in either case nails may be used instead of the staples D D.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination with the wooden joist or studs A A and the wire lathing B B, the metallic tubes 0 C, the wires E E, the staples D D, and the wire lacings c e, in manner substantially as and for the uses and purposes specified.
