NITED STATES FRANK S. DIMON, OF FORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
TIRE HGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,955, dated May 15, 1888.
Application filed November 8, 1887. Serial No. 254,640. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. DIMoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Tighteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention consists in the construction of the clamps of atire-tightening device of the kind which fasten onto a spoke of a wheel, whereby it can be easily and quickly fitted to spokes of any size and made available for general use.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device in position on the spoke of a wheel, and Fig. 2 is a view of the same detached.
A A are the two parts of a clamp adapted to fit around a spoke. They are connected by an interlocking hinge, B, on one side and on the other by a bolt and nut, 0.
Each of the clamps has a bracket, D, which carries a small jack-screw, E. The hinge is formed by means of a tongue-piece, F, carried by one part of the clamp, having a number of cross-bars, f, or lugs with which the hooks G, carried by the other part of the clamp, can engage and by interlocking with either of the set of lugs or bars f form a hinge.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The hooks G are caught into the pair of lugs f, which will give the right spread to the clamps for the particular spoke on which it is to be used, and the clamps are brought around the spoke close up to the felly and fastened together on the opposite side by bolt and nut O and screwed up tight. The jack-screws E, carried by the clamps, should be run down before the device is applied. They are now screwed up and the felly raised in the usual way.
To remove the device from the spoke, the operator has simply to take off the nut G or to loosen it sufficiently to allow the hookhinge to be unfastened.
I am aware that a hinged tire-tightening device to be attached to the spoke of a wheel for the purpose of permitting the felly tohe raised by jack-screws carried by it is not new, and I do not claim it,broadly; but my improvement enables the same device to be readily applied to spokes of different sizes, as the clamps can be expanded on both sides-on one side by means of the bolt used in the ordinary way and on the other by means of the hook-hinge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The clamps A A, adapted to grip a spoke and having the interlocking hinge formed of the hooks G and the lugs f, together with the fastening bolt and nut, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
FRANK S. DIMON.
