Abstract

A machine to install screening into the frame of a window or door, which gives an improved seal between the screen and the frame, as well as increasing the production efficiency of the installation. The machine consists of a wheel manually driven by a handle mounted on a frame fitted with rollers, with the wheel serving to roll screening into a groove in the screen frame as the device is rolled along the screen frame.

Attorney, Agent, or FirmI-Ioward I. Podell [57] ABSTRACT 3 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures SCREEN REPAIR MACHINE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION I My invention relates to an automatic machine for inserting screening into the frame of a window or door.
A major advantage of my invention is that an improved seal is made between the screening and frame.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed de- DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED I EMBODIMENT I Turning now descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the machine ll which, as shown in FIG. 3, rolls the edge of screening 21 into a groove 29 in the face of the screen frame 20. The frame 20 is placed upon a set of freely rotatable rollers 12 mounted in bracket 22 of the machine 11. Adjustable bracket 14 fastened to shaft housing 15 guides the edge 41 of screen frame 20. Splined roller 16, which inserts the screening 21 into the groove 29 of frame 20, is rotated by means of a crank handle 19 which is connected to the spline roller 16 by means of rotatable shaft 46 inside of shaft housing 15 fixed to main arm 13 of the machine 11. The adjustable-angle bracket 22 holds the set of rollers 12 upon which the screen frame is rested. Bracket 22 is adjustable in location on main arm 13 with bolts 17 and 35 fitting in bracket 22 and riding in slot 44 of main arm 13, and serving to adjust the height of splined wheel 16 above a screen frame 20 that is riding on the rollers 12 of bracket 22. A spring 37 applies compressive force drawing bracket 22 towards wheel 16, with the desired setting locked when nuts 36 are tightened on screws 35 and 17.
Bracket 22 may be locked in the open position away from wheel 16 by means of pivotable link 28, rotatably fixed to angle 18 of bracket 22, which can be looped over pin 38 fixed to arm 13.
The plane of wheel 16 is preferably set at an angle other than perpendicular to the plane of the bottom or top face of the screen frame, so as to roll screening into the groove 29 in the screen frame in a locking manner.
Wheel 16 is preferably formed with spaced teeth 39 along its periphery.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. Portable apparatus designed to install screening into a groove in a screen frame by rolling the screening into the groove in the frame, said apparatus being adaptable to be mounted onto the frame to be screened and to ride on said frame in use, comprising a machine bracket fitted with a platform member on which a screen frame may be rested, said platform member fitted with freely revolving rollers for the support of said screen frame,
a spline wheel rotatably mounted on said bracket and attached to means to rotate said spline wheel, said spline wheel positioned by adjustable means so as to ride on the surface of said screen frame which is opposed to the surface of the frame resting on the platform rollers, and particularly to ride in a groove i said opposed frame surface, such that the spline wheel may force screening lying on said opposed surface between the spline wheel periphery and the said frame surface into the groove in the frame, as the spline wheel is rotated and the apparatus travels along the length of the frame.
2. The combination as recited in claim 1 in which the spline wheel periphery is fitted with teeth, so as to provide wedging action of the screening installed in the groove between sections of the screening engaged by the wheel teeth.
3. The combination as recited in claim 1 in which the plane of the spline wheel is at an angle to a line perpendicular to the plane tangent to the rollers of the platform member, so as to force screening into a groove on a frame resting on said rollers at an acute angle to the plane of the screening after installation so as to tension the installed screening.

Claims (3)

1. Portable apparatus designed to install screening into a groove in a screen frame by rolling the screening into the groove in the frame, said apparatus being adaptable to be mounted onto the frame to be screened and to ride on said frame in use, comprising a machine bracket fitted with a platform member on which a screen frame may be rested, said platform member fitted with freely revolving rollers for the support of said screen frame, a spline wheel rotatably mounted on said bracket and attached to means to rotate said spline wheel, said spline wheel positioned by adjustable means so as to ride on the surface of said screen frame which is opposed to the surface of the frame resting on the platform rollers, and particularly to ride in a groove in said opposed frame surface, such that the spline wheel may force screening lying on said opposed surface between the spline wheel periphery and the said frame surface into the groove in the frame, as the spline wheel is rotated and the apparatus travels along the length of the frame.
