THILL=COUPLING SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382.381, dated May 8. 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON B. PERINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Ooupliugs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in thill'couplings; and it has for its object to provide a cheap and simple means whereby rattling is prevented.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing the same attached to a portion of an axle. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the hook-rods removed.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the shackle-iron, which is secured to the shaft in the usual manner, and is provided with the usual lugs to receive the thill-bolt.
B indicates the thill-iron, having the usual eye, as shown, which is connected to the said lugs by means of the ordinary bolt and nut.
0 indicates the antirattler, which consists of a piece of rubber properly shaped to bear against the under side of the thill-eye, as more fully shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
D indicates a clip'plate, which is provided near opposite ends with vertical apertures a, and is secureiy held against the under side of the rubber G by means of bolts or rods E. These rods have their lower ends threaded to receive fasteningnuts, and have their upper ends hooked, as shown at b, to engage the perforated lugs of the shackle.
From the construction illustrated it will be observed that this anti-rattler is adapted to be used on a thill-couplin'g of any type, and it may be removed and replaced without detaching any of the parts of the coupling. As the rubber wears in use and it is desirable to tighten the same upon the thill-eye, it is only necessary to turn the nuts cl upon the threaded ends of the hookrods, which action will draw up the plate D and bring the rubber thereon firmly against the thilleye.
\Vhile I have described rubber as interposed between the plate D and the thill-iron, yet it is obvious that leather or other suitable material may be employed.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a thillcoupling, of
the threaded rods passing through the said plate and having their upper ends hooked to engage the lugs of the shackle, and nuts for securing the rods to the said plate, substan tially as specified.
