OOMBINED CANE AND CHAIR.
No: 382,308.- Patented May 8, l 888'.

NITED STATES JOHN H. KAMERER, OF LAKE, OHIO.
COMBINED CANE AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,308, dated May 8, 1888,
Application filed January 16, 1888. Serial No.2fi0,949. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KAMERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cane and Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a seat or chair. Fig. 2 is a view showing same closed. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device folded to form a cane. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the cane-head. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the cover.
The present invention has relation to combined chairs and canes; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the legs of the chair proper, and arepreferably formed round and of hard wood. To the top or upper ends of the legs A is securely attached the flexible seat B. This seat is preferably formed of canvas of sufficient strength for the purpose designed, and is strengthened at the points where it is attached to the legs A by means of the leather corners or patches a. Said corners are securely sewed to the seat B, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The ring 0 is located substantially as shown in the drawings, and is held in proper position by means of the staples I). Said staples are securely attached to the legs A. The ring 0 is for the purpose of holding the legs A together.
When it is desired to change my device from a chair to a cane, the legs A are folded,as illus trated in Fig. 3, and the extension leg or stick 0 turned or placed as shown in said Fig. 3.
This extension leg or stick 0 is pivotally attached to the bottom or lower end of one of the legs A by means of the bar d. For the purpose of securely holding the extension leg or stick a in proper position when used as a cane, the band or ferrule D is pressed down ward until it embraces the top or upper portion of said extension leg or stick 0 and the lower portion of the leg A, to which the said ring is attached. For the purpose of preventing the band or ferrule D from slipping downward or away from the leg A, the pin 6 is provided, which forms a stop.
The cover or case E may be made of oilcloth, and is for the purpose o'finclosing the seat B and the top or upper ends of the legs A. The bottom or lower end of the cover or case E is provided with the button and but ton-hole F,or their equivalents, which are for the purpose of holding the cover E in proper position. The cover or case E is sewed or stitched together at its top or upper portion and left open at its lower portion, so as to be easily adjusted.
The head or knob G is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as shown, is placed over the top or upper portion of the cover E. Said head or knob G may be formed of vulcanized rubber or other suitable mate rial. It will be seen that when the head or knob G is removed it will form a convenient drinking-cup.
In the drawings three legs are shown; but it will be understood that four legs may be used if desired and the seat formed square.
The elastic band H is located as shown, and is securely attached to the leg A, carrying the extension leg or stick 0, and is for the purpose of holding the leg or stick 0 in a folded position.
Having fully described my invention, what I i claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The legs A, held together by the ring 0, and having attached to the top or upper ends of said legs the seat B, the hinged extension leg or stick, and the ferrule D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The legs A, held together by the ring 0, and having attached to their top or upper ends the seat B, the cover E, and the detachable head or knob G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The legs A, held together and having attached to their top or upper ends the seat B, the strengthening corners or patches a, sewed to said seat, the cover E, the knob G, the ex- In testimony that I claim the above I have tension leg or stick a, and the ferrule D, subhereunto subscribed my name in the presence [0 stantially as and for the purpose specified. of two witnesses. 4.
