Abstract

This invention is an indexing device which consists of several separable rectangular labels held together by a connection on each short edge. Each label consists of an opaque sheet for carrying an inscription, and a transparent sheet for covering the inscribed face of the opaque sheet. When separated from each other, each label is adapted to be held in a pocket, so that the inscription is visible.

Each pocket is adapted to carry a card with an easily visible indexing inscription, which identifies the container contents. A transparent cover sheet is often provided to cover and protect the inscription. The

pocket usually consists of a rectangular frame which is open at one of its short sides to allow insertion or removal of the indexing card.

The cards are usually rectangular in shape and several cards are often attached together by a perforated edge along their long sides. This attached card system allows handling ease especially in a typewriter, where small individual cards can be a problem. Furthermore, the perforations allow ease of separation for use. The transparent cover slide may be also provided in perforated sheets or'separately.

Although the idea of forming the card from'a large sheet has well-recognized advantages, the perforated long edge has an important drawback. When the cards are separated, each long side is left with a jagged edge. These jagged edges not only detract from the appearance of the card but also make it very difficult to push the card into the pocket. This difficulty results in a wrinkled unsightly card, and wasted time.

These and other difficulties experienced with the prior art devices have been obviated in a novel manner by the present invention.

It is, therefore, an outstanding object of the invention to provide an indexing system in which cards are provided to carry inscriptions and the cards can be held in a pocket so that the inscription is visible.

Another object of this invention is the provision of an indexing system in which cards are provided with transparent covers to protect the inscription they bear.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of an indexing system in which cards are provided attached in large sheets for easy handling but from which they can be easily detached.

It is another object of the instant invention to provide an indexing system in which cards can be detached from a main sheet without the formation of ragged edges on the card.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide an index system in which the units are joined together so that they may be readily lettered in a typewriter.

With these and other objects in view, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art, the invention resides in the combination of parts set forth in the specification and covered by the claims appended hereto.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention involves an indexing system which includes cards on which inscriptions can be written and transparent covers to protect the inscription. The card and cover are meant to slide into the short side of a pocket from which the inscription is visible. The cards and covers are provided in large sheets, held together so that when they are separated, they are easily slid into the pocket.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The character of the invention, however, may be best understood by reference to one of its structural forms, as illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an indexing device embodying the principles of the present invention, and

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a detached card and cover as they are being slid into a pocket.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring first to FIG. 1, wherein are best shown the general features of the invention, the indexing system, indicated generally by the reference numeral 10, is shown as having a rectangular paper sheet 11 and a rectangular transparent sheet 12. Each sheet has a series of cuts entirely through the sheets and geometrically similar between the two sheets. These cuts include a first set of parallel cuts 13, parallel also to one edge of the sheets and extending to about one-fourth inch from each of the side edges. The second set are a series of cuts 14 extending from the ends of and perpendicular to each line in the first set so that they approach but do not reach a second set out coming from the adjacent first set cut. The result is that each sheet is divided into a plurality of

15 and 16 connected to a peripheral frame 17 by breakable bridges 18.

The use and operation of the invention will now be readily understood in view of the above description. An inscription is typed or written on a card 15 on sheet 1 1. The bridges 18 at the end of the card 15 are broken, as are those of cover card 16. FIG. 2 shows the cover card 16 and card 15 with its inscription 19 being slid into slot 20 in pocket 21 of a file folder whereits inscription is visible through opening 22. Because the longitudinal edges of the

15 and 16 are smoothly cut, there is no problem in sliding them into the pocket 21 of the file. In the past, the perforated edges made this assembly with the file quite difficult. In addition, the paper sheet 11 (before the individual cards are detached) can be readily inserted in a typewriter, whereas individual cards would be too small to use in the conventional typewriter.

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, however, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but itis desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

The invention having been thus described, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by letters patent is:

1. An indexing device comprising:

a. a main body of opaque material of a generally rectangular shape adapted to carry indicia, the body bearing a series of spaced, parallel primary cuts extending across the main body and terminating a first short distance from each of two parallel sides, and a secondary cut extending from the end of each of the said primary cuts, each cut terminating a second short distance from the cut extending toward it from the immediately adjacent primary cut, the second short distance being such that the material between adjacent secondary cuts is easily severed to form card portions, and

b. a secondary body formed of transparent sheet, having exactly the same shape in cuts as the main body to form window portions so that a cord portion of the main body and a window portion of the secondary body can be used together in an indexing tab.

Claims

1. An indexing device comprising: a. a main body of opaque material of a generally rectangular shape adapted to carry indicia, the body bearing a series of spaced, parallel primary cuts extending across the main body and terminating a first short distance from each of two parallel sides, and a secondary cut extending from the end of each of the said primary cuts, each cut terminating a second short distance from the cut extending toward it from the immediately adjacent primary cut, the second short distance being such that the material between adjacent secondary cuts is easily severed to form card portions, and b. a secondary body formed of transparent sheet, having exactly the same shape in cuts as the main body to form window portions so that a cord portion of the main body and a window portion of the secondary body can be used together in an indexing tab.
